ABIR Hosts Workshop For BFIS Summer Interns

The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) hosted six Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) summer interns for a 2-hour workshop on the overview and historical development of the (re)insurance industry in Bermuda and its major role in the global insurance and reinsurance industry today.

BFIS offers ‘Intro-to-Insurance’ summer intern programs in Bermuda, Atlanta, Chicago, or London to junior, senior, and post-graduate students considering careers in the insurance sector. Since 2002, 81 students have participated in the BFIS Intern Program.

Leila Madeiros, Senior Vice-President and Deputy Director of ABIR, presented students taking part in the workshop with valuable information on the integral role that Bermuda’s prominent insurance and reinsurance sector plays on a global scale. “It was a pleasure to interact with the BFIS Interns and have the opportunity to tell the Bermuda insurance market story and ABIR wishes them every success on their 3-week internship here in Bermuda” says Madeiros.

Cathy Lapsley, Executive Director of BFIS said, “Each year ABIR gives a tremendous start to our Bermuda programme ensuring that the interns have a solid understanding of the importance of industry to Bermuda”.

Participants included Bermudian university students Daniel Andrade (University of Toronto, Actuarial Science), Sophie Isaac (Mount Saint Vincent University, Accounting), Zakiya Smith (Middlesex University, Business Management), and Justin Tavares (University of Central Florida, Finance/Management). Other participants included visiting American university students Ryan Curran (Illinois State University, Insurance and Finance) and Spencer Richardson (Illinois State University, Insurance and Finance).
