Menuhin To Host “Passport To World Of Wines”

June 10, 2014

A charity providing free violin lessons for pupils across Bermuda is getting ready to hold its biggest fundraising event of the year.

The Menuhin Foundation of Bermuda, formed after a visit to the island by the famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin, will be holding the event, dubbed ‘Passport to a World of Wines,’ later this month.

Foundation Chairperson Terri Allison said, “This is our main fundraising event of the year and we hope that as many people as possible will attend and support us.

“Since the Foundation formed in 1976, we have given hundreds of children access to free lessons in stringed instruments and helped to open up the world of music for them.”

In 1976, Lord Yehudi Menuhin was in Bermuda to perform in the Bermuda Festival and a visit to a string group at Warwick Academy sparked his interest. Out of that grew the idea to establish a string quartet in Bermuda that would teach stringed instruments to pupils at all of Bermuda’s schools.

It was from that that the Menuhin Foundation was formed, with a goal to ‘foster and develop an interest in classical and other music and the playing thereof, and to recruit teachers and organize and produce programmes and concerts and other forms of entertainment and musical education.

The Foundation held its annual concert at Warwick Academy last weekend, which was attended by over 400 people and 300 students from almost every school on the island.

Mrs. Allison added, “The services that we provide to the children of Bermuda would not be possible without the generous support of the people of Bermuda, businesses, and our patrons.

“We do hope that as many people as possible will support this event; one day it might be your child who stands on the stage and plays.”

‘Passport to a World of Wines,’ sponsored by Discovery Wines and Beau Rivage Restaurant and Bar, is being held on Saturday, June 28, at the Newstead Belmont Hills hotel from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

Wines will be paired with regional cuisines of France, Italy, Spain and California and there will be performances by Menuhin Foundation Scholar Alex Fox, The Menuhin West String Ensemble and The Menuhin Quintet. There will also be a silent and a live auction.

Tickets, at $125, are available from bdatix.bm and enquires can be made to jdgibbons60@gmail.com
