“Me Two” To Host Emancipation Lectures

“Me Two” is getting set to host a 2014 Emancipation Day Celebration, featuring a three-night lecture series beginning on July 28 and running through July 30, 2014.

Speakers at the series will include Quinton Sherlock Jr, Dr. Samori Camara, Eugene Johnston, and Junior Burchall. All forums are free.

Monday’s lecture, titled “Creating Our Cultural Rivals,” will be delivered by Eugene Johnson and Quinton Sherlock Jr.

Of the first lecture, the event’s flier says, “This presentation will explore the necessity of African people being the craftsman of their own cultural markers, with reflection on the Cup Match experience in Bermuda.”

The first lecture will take place at Manchester Unity Lodge Hall at 6.30pm on July 28.

Tuesday’s lecture, titled “Lost in Translation: African Agency, Abolition, and Emancipation with Perspectives from Bermuda” will be delivered by Quinton Sherlock Jr.

Of that lecture, the flier says, “This presentation will address the active role Africans played in the struggles against slavery, with a specific focus on the Bermuda story.”

The second lecture will be held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI] at 6.00pm on July 29.

Wednesday’s lecture, titled “Education for Liberation,” will be delivered by Dr. Samori Camara and Junior Burchall, moderated by Eugene Johnston.

Of the third lecture, the flier says, “This forum will focus on the idea of an African-centered education. Particular emphasis will be on African-centered homeschooling and co-operative networks.”

This final lecture will take place at Warwick Workmen’s Club at 6.30pm on July 30.
