Bermuda Hosts “Torchbearers” Tourism Group

August 25, 2014

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] and travel industry partners hosted a double header of events this weekend to promote the island as a global destination for both leisure and group travel.

The BTA said, “While filming of The X Factor garnered front page coverage in all major UK newspapers and millions of social media impressions, nearly 100 influential meeting professionals and travel industry partners were introduced to Bermuda as a meetings and incentive destination.

“In coordination with several other national tourism boards [including the UK, Ireland, Monaco and Switzerland], BTA worked with the Fairmont Hotels to host Torchbearers.

“The Torchbearers event attracts senior employees from some of North America’s most qualified incentive and meeting planning companies as well as select corporate end users that have the ability to influence site selection with corporate clients.”

“The meetings and incentive market is important in building a solid foundation of business for Bermuda’s future. And Bermuda has great energy and stunning settings to inspire new ways of learning and rewarding high-performing employees,” said Victoria Isley, BTA’s Chief Sales & Marketing Officer.

She added, “Hosting a specialized event in the meetings industry is a really effective way to get event planners to ‘test-drive’ the destination. Product sampling is still one of the most effective tools in marketing.”

In addition to one-on-one meetings, attendees were able to “test-drive” Bermuda for meetings and events. Excursions, activities and off-site functions circulated guests around the island including: home & garden tours; snorkeling; St. George’s; boat, bike & beach excursions; sailing regattas, grilling with Goslings and an evening reception at Commissioner’s House.

Brent Ritchie, Director, Group & Incentives for Destinations Inc. and one of the Torchbearer attendees provided his perspective, saying “Bermuda provides an excellent option for my client’s group and incentive travel programs.

“It offers beautiful resorts with exceptional service in a safe and clean destination, and friendly people who are genuinely happy to welcome guests to this unique paradise. Add to this some amazing beaches, warm crystal blue waters, world-class golf, and noteworthy cuisine, and you have all the needed components to ensure a fun and memorable event.

“I heard it best said that Bermuda has overtones of proper British and undertones of fun Caribbean – just like the traditional Bermuda attire for men – dress shirt and sport coat on top, with Bermuda shorts and socks below. The perfect combination!”

On behalf of countless others, I take this opportunity to thank the Bermuda Tourism Authority (B.T.A.) for what they have done and will continue doing to place Bermuda back on the “map”.
