August 7, 2014

The Governor, Mrs Fergusson and the staff at Government House said they “were sorry to hear about the tragic accident involving Mrs Dawn Santucci-Smith and Mr Melvin Smith.”

A post on social media by the Govt. House account said, “Mrs Santucci-Smith has played an important part in involving Northlands primary school children in the Government House schools garden project.

“We were further saddened by the news of the passing of Mr Melvin Smith yesterday and offer our sincere condolences to Mrs Santucci-Smith and her family.

“We were fortunate to have met Mr Smith recently when he visited Government House on the happy occasion of the schools’ garden project barbecue.

“Our prayers and thoughts are with his lovely wife; she is an inspirational lady and we pray that, with the love and support of her family, she will find the strength to pull through this terrible tragedy.”

The collision occurred just before 6am on Saturday morning on Kindley Field Road in St. George’s, and saw the driver crash into two parked cars and then the tent that Mr. and Mrs. Smith were asleep in.

The driver, 19 year old Calin Maybury, was arrested following the collision, and yesterday he was charged with causing the death of Mr. Smith by driving without due care and attention, and was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mrs. Dawn Santucci-Smith by driving without due care and attention.
