Kiwi Broadcaster Backs Island As Cup Venue
Speculation continues to abound over whether Bermuda or San Diego will be announced as the host of the 2017 America’s Cup sailing event, with New Zealand broadcaster 3 News supporting the idea that Bermuda will come out on top before the decision is made, thanks to the need for the event to captivate a more apt European audience.
In a recent opinion piece published by the media outlet, 3 News says, “With the deadline for entries for the next America’s Cup now passed, few questions have been answered about the shape for the next regatta.
“The challengers will be revealed early next month, but that group may hold the key to one of the biggest mysteries for the 35th edition of the Cup: the venue.
“If Oracle want to chase the money, the best option is likely to be Bermuda, with the Atlantic territory providing a window to the more lucrative Europe audience.
“If at least four of the challengers are European, Bermuda sits in a friendlier time zone than the west coast of the United States.
“If the schedule follows the same format as San Francisco, 1.00pm and 2.00pm start times in Bermuda would be 5.00pm and 6.00pm in London, as opposed to 9.00pm and 10.00pm for the same start times in San Diego.
“It’s unlikely the new Protocol has made any real difference to how Americans will perceive the Cup, making it as hard to sell as ever to break into the market there.
“Add Bermuda’s much friendlier tax breaks and it becomes a much more appealing venue for Oracle, and a much easier host to turn the event into a money maker.”
Regardless of the outcome of the venue choosing process, Bermuda is already set to host an America’s Cup World Series racing event.
I think Bermuda will come out on top.
Does anyone know how long the Cup and/or pre series races last, is it a few days, weeks, a month. Interested to know for rental property purposes.
BERMUDA ALL DE WAY…LEMONADE TIME IS HERE!!
Since Susan Jackson gave the Government’s response to taking on the quality of life study in Bermuda, perhaps, she can tell us, with equal candor, how much will it cost the Government of Bermuda to host this event?
Dr Grant Gibbons and the premier himself suffer from the virus of silence.
Susan, can you give us “transparency and honesty” that the OBA claim is the hallmark of the Government in power?
Guess they won’t know until it is official.
Given that we are in the bidding/approval stages it is normal not to reveal your hand to your competitor. That’s the reality of attempting to lure such prestigous competitions to a country. That is business.
But if you want to make it a conspiracy theory that is your right.
Carry on.
Obviously Grant and the OBA haven’t figured out alllll the costs yet dumba**, stop trying to stir the pot. This would have never happened with the PLP in government, shows how much they really care about sailing, etc. Why open their mouth right away and sound silly, just wait for the FACTS, something that your beloved PLP kno nothing about. Nexttttttttttt….Better yet call Grant up, he will answer you call, he has for mine.
A deal like securing the Americas Cup,cannot be made behind The Maximart.
I wonder what the PLP think of this? Mark Bean has been silent on this initiative. Maybe it is better that way!
Initially he made a positive comment hedged with a corcern about the cost. The PLP had an image on their website endorsing the America’s Cup with a comment along the bottom. That has disappeared as far as I can see. I think they are waiting in the wings trying to work out what their strategy will be for this one if Bermuda wins the finals.
Dammm I just don’t understand how blog people can turn this positive into a negative. …turn into a PLP/OBA THINKING … CANT YOU SEE THIS IS A Bermuda thing… PLEASE STOP IT
You think that they are figureing a way to give it a knockdown & sink it.
Would not surprise me at all
