New Parking Fees In Hamilton Start Today

August 18, 2014

The City of Hamilton will be divided into three pay and display parking zones with separate pricing effective today [Aug 18].

When it was first announced back in June, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to the City of Hamilton, Edward Benevides stated, “Effective Monday, August 18, 2014 the Pay and Display zones in Hamilton will change, the city will be divided into three pay and display zones.

“In some instances, the cost to park has been reduced, in some locations the parking rates stay the same and in other instances parking rates will be introduced. There will be different prices for different zones in the city.

The zones and per hour rates are as follows:

  • Zone 1 parking will cost $2.00 an hour and covers all streets between Front Street and Church, including Church Street.
  • Zone 2 parking will cost $1.50 an hour and covers all streets between Church Street and Dundonald Street, including Dundonald Street.
  • Zone 3 parking will cost $1.00 an hour and covers all streets between Dundonald Street and North Street

Mr. Benevides continued, “There will be reduced all-day parking rates. All day parking at Bulls Head and Elliott Street Car Parks will be reduced to $5.00 a day or $1.00 an hour up to five hours.

“After five hours in these car parks, parking will have no further charge. Easy Park meters, mobile applications and pay and display tickets will continue to be in use in these car parks and will be adjusted to reflect the new price structure.”

“Signs will be erected around the city to ensure motorists will know which parking zone they are in. In order to avoid being clamped or ticketed motorists are urged to read the signage on the sidewalks and in car parks before they park and leave their vehicles.”

So, with the increased revenues, do ya think, they’ll start clearing the city storefronts of the bums that are sleeping there with impunity and removing the debris they leave behind. The state of City of Hamilton is a National Disgrace!

    • Terry says:

“the bums that are sleeping there” is a social problem.
It is the Police who take care of this.
Places are full and some of these “bums” don’t want to be relocated; a social problem.

Now back to the “New Parking Fees”.
      Shalom.

  2. Ridiculous says:

This is not going to work for the outskirts of town. First of all residents in the area of Fish and Things have been left without their orginal Residential parking, as well as on Elliott Street. Secondly, how are people going to attend to appointments in the various areas where there are doctors, hairdressers, barbers, BIU, Nursery etc. Restaurants will suffer as people won’t be able to go and get their lunch etc. This was not thought out at all. Concillmen for the areas need to do a walk about and the residents need to speak up. For those persons who don’t have a car but rely on others for pickups etc. should be given a Visitor card to put in window while doing so.

With these changes everyone now has to go and get one of those parking things and spend time figuring how to work it. If you are going to ask for pay parking put in some meters in the specific areas.

Shuld have left it like it was.

  3. campervan says:

Do the mayor and his councillors get free parking at City Hall?

    • Joonya says:

      Grow up

      • Kunta says:

So in essence, there’s no free parking from Bernard’s Park to Front Street.

    • 32n64w says:

Yes, and I believe it continues once they step down.

    • Creamy says:

Of course they do. They have to attend paid meetings, get fitted up for free suits, and all that.

seems like the city of hamilton is spending a lot of money to make people pay more for buying in Bermuda.. Paid parking whether they call it modern or not is senseless in Bermuda and should have never been allowed to happen,.It has not been consistent since its inception and there seems to be lots of parking in the city with less business so why penalize people for parking, trying to buy Bermuda.. makes no sense to me to make people pay to come and do business with you… don’t care what “modern” means, its silly!! unfriendly! and more people will opt to do business outside city limits..At one time it was a circus with people leaving their cubicles to move their cars so they won’t be ticketed, now they have to worry nabout being clamped and better have $100.oo asap!! this is very threatening and don’t care where else in world they do it , I never agreed for it in Bermuda. I do far less shopping in hamilton since paid parking…

    • Redo says:

Yup, looks like i will be taking advantage of FREE PARKING AT AMAZON.COM. Epic fail COH. Epic.

    • Toodle-oo says:

I positively refuse to go into town in a 4 wheeled vehicle any more .
You could give me a Rolls Royce and I still wouldn’t go in.
Bike only . Unfortunately a lot of people do not have this option .
Anyway, it doesn’t matter much. In a few years the island will be completely broke and the CoH will be begging people to come in. If there’s any shops still open.

      • sage says:

It’s hell to find a bike spot at times and I bet they are scheming on how to charge bikes too.

    • Jadon says:

Just break your clamp off and leave it in the parking lot. They can take you to court but they will 100% lose the battle. It’s illegal to clamp. Also once that clamp is connected to your car it’s your property ! So do what you please with those clamps and don’t pay them. The only reason I can believe they clamp and don’t give you a 100 dollar ticket is because if it’s a ticket you have to pay the courts. Which means the government gets the money and not the COH. Surprised ? I’m not.

  5. well…Mr. Benibedes is causing confusion with the seperate rates and by that I do hereby imply this tack is deviate and cunningly designed ,a cunning stunt indeed, these different fees aren’t done to give lesser fees here and there………it is “specifically by design “, to ensnare through deceptive means money similarly to a speed trap…same thing really,75mph on this side of the tree…and 35mph right on the other side, like how dey do in Alabama late at night. It is the same thing really.If…..if it was done “correctly”…it would be flatt rate across the board!……..How much is that ticket?

  6. somuchless says:

I saw the corp putting up the signs yesterday. I’m sure there will be a lot of clamped vehicles and pissed off people this week.

Anyway beats parking in NYC or DC where parking can be up to 10 dollars an hour or 25 dollars a day in some places.

    • PBanks says:

The amount of signs they’ve erected, that must have cost a decent amount of money. Gonna have to recoup that in quick order.

      • BlueFamiliar says:

No to mention their being put up after standard working hours. I expect there was overtime paid.

    • abby cadabby says:

Saw a couple of employees in trucks checking the Laffan Street area at 11:00 a.m.. Interesting to note that there were cars and a truck parked adjacent to the Corporation’s Headquarters and they did not have a meter displayed. Do employee’s have free parking?

  7. Mike says:

I would encourage the motoring community to look out for each other and pass along any unused portion of the parking vouchers.

  8. coolieh says:

Don’t forget to update your EasyPark Meters…if not you’ll get a surprise!

I also heard Bull’s Head is now zone 01 08, but signs have yet to be changed. They still show 01 04 for top floor and 01 05 for all other floors.

    Smiths

  9. confused says:

    I thought clamping wasn’t permitted.

    • haha says:

It isn’t so rip that s*** off when they put it on there and throw it in the ocean!

  10. Truth is killin' me... says:

Ed Benevides…just another puppet…fall guy for de trees and now this!

  11. Tricks are for Kids says:

The Meter Maid is ticketing as we speak around Union Square….saw two cars being ticketed while waiting. ..#theyrenotplaying
    ..#nobreaks

  12. sswhite says:

    PLP’s fault…

  13. Sandgrownan says:

    Clamped?

  14. hmmmnmnm says:

So we have to pay in back a town too?

  15. Dee says:

People who park along the road just past the Tennis Stadium (just before the road joins Laffan Street) are going to be in for a shock when they get back to the cars is they did not notice the signs. This road is now paid parking and the signs were up giving the code for the parking meters.

    • PBanks says:

Wow, Canal Road too? Man CoH has been thorough, haven’t they.

  16. Rasta says:

COH ripping us off, like the unions raising dues on their members.

  17. RealTalk says:

Isn’t Trott road private? Seems like there are a lot of reserved spots there for the nearby businesses.

  18. Adult says:

park at the nearest ferry terminal and catch the ferry into hamilton,,no parking no tickets!

    • PBanks says:

The way vandals have been striking at parking lots, parking at Rockaway or along Cobbs Hill Road for example doesn’t feel like a safe option either.

  19. Mumbojumbo says:

I honestly don’t mind too much payin to park, but the parking fee should be the amount derived from all three zones, remove the possibility of a mistake on pay for park zones for that fee is the fee of a parking ticket and an additional fee (unlawful) to remove an extortive clamping…..you see?…I view the zonage an observance in intentional convolution to confuse and enjoy the rewards of the mistake through the two ther fees!….Anybody doing buisiness in Hamilton parking their cars don’t enjoy the confusion….it is quite literally a pain in the butt…one flatt fee is what we need….if you put the wrong zone it’s a fifty dollar ticket and another fifty to remove the clamp. All law is based on reasonable and unreasonable, ignorence is no excuse…well if that is the case then arrest the guy who clamps cars ,he is taking possession of private property (stealing),he is depriving a person of their liberty (transportation),what happens if they are diabetic, epileptic, physically challenged,….is not this behaviour (clamping) an act likely to cause harm, in any one of these medical conditions (and there are a few more)also children ….unreasonable to expect…as a law obiding citizen you do not expect this constraint….no …this is unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination.

  20. Mumbojumbo says:

    I’ll swim…

  21. Y-Gurl says:

Another Benevides enforment tactic, why on earth in what is essentially a small town do we need different zones, surely this is just to increase the parking ticket revenue or have them clamped done by trying to trick people into forgetting to change the zone? Makes about as much sense as most of the C of H decisions over the last few years I suppose. Am I reading that they are now going to clamp on the public roads, surely they need to get the legal questions around this initiative before starting a war on our streets, I think now we will see the anger from the frustrated tax payer being bullied by a semi legal organisation who run the city as some sort of sim city experiment, including the many many road closures for trenching without notice or permits. People need to take a stand for what is right.

  22. BlueFamiliar says:

So… most of us are making the same money we did five years ago, or less, but now we have to spend more money, to people have done nothing but make questionable decisions throwing away the funds at their disposal, so that we can shop in town.

The result, fewer people will shop in town, town businesses will suffer, more people will have less money or will be out of work, the corporation will make less in both parking fees and taxes.

Yep, another great decision for CoH.

I don’t understand the mindset of these people. Why do they make decisions that any sensible person can see accomplish aboslutely nothing positive.

    The new 40 thieves.

  23. TickTockBda says:

SMH… well hey you either drive and pay for parking or catch the bus, catch the ferry, walk, bike or car pool.

We as the people have more power than we realize.

Don’t complain if you are going to continue to drive, yes some people have to drive but still it is your choice to drive so you must pay or don’t drive and don’t pay.

The choice is yours, but for the record I think taking all free parking and turning them into pay parking is ridiculous!!!!

  24. gimme a break says:

rode my pedal bike today. also not shopping in Hamilton anymore either. Businesses can thank the Benevides Bunch. Tired of this money, land grabbing tactics. COH do your job and keep the city clean, get rid of the dirt and stench emanating from some of the doorways.
