Webcast Replay & Photos: Non-Mariners Race

August 3, 2014

[Updated] The annual Non-Mariners Race is getting underway today [Aug 3] at the Sandys Boat Club, with the always popular ‘non-event’ seeing strange and unusual watercraft taking to the water, most sinking within minutes.

The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition.

I see de Black guy’s always being made fun off.

      • Franklin Jr says:

        fackity bye!

you’d find a way to be outraged if I handed you $1m

How does one even have a shoulder big enough to handle that chip of yours?

  2. swing voter says:

LOL looka tha $5.65 half gallon Dunkley Milk! um gon bac to goat milk bie

  3. Philip Cook says:

That’s the NON-Calypso Pipe Band, Bruce!

  4. LMAO2 says:

Sad that even this is racial. It pokes fun at PLP for years and this year where fahy and dunkley have been caught out – they still focus on the black politicians. I’m not going back to support this event ever!

    • A Dingo says:

I’m sure the organizers will be waking up sweating with worry at night as they contemplate the tragic loss of your presence.

    • Jus' sayin' says:

So next year put in your own non-craft and rip whomever you like.

    • ??? says:

I usually stop by and look at the floats and every year (and yes I said every year) I see floats making fun l of the politicians on both sides of the fence, just as this year I saw folks poking at Dunkley and the OBA… I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t see any on Fahy now that you mention it, but to be fair not every single PLP member was single out either. Now I’ll be the first to say that Bermudians as a whole need to stand up and make their voices heard and personally I think was is far from a racial event. If you were talking about the previous Premier on the side of the milk carton, I think you missed the joke. Now if you choose not to support this event that’s your choice, but if you only see issues or in this case a “nonevent” as us vs them, then you or better yet your mindset is part of the problem. And in case you’re wondering I’m a black Bermudian that supports the Progressive Labour Party.

      • Kunta says:

@??? they never put white faces on their floats, its called SUBLIMINAL RACISM!!!!!!
And being a black Bermudian that supports the Progressive Labour Party dose not give credence, don’t you know in Bermuda’s History there were attempted slave revolts documented and they were all foiled because of a Black Surrogate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • ??? says:

@ KUNTA… The reason that I put that I was Black and support the PLP is that certain segments of our society believe that if you disagree with them on an issue that they deem racist that you must be white and support the OBA. And to answer your question yes I know about Bermuda history and the attempted slave revolts and great many other things about Bermuda history (and in my personal opinion thats the reason why Bermuda History in taught in schools is because folks have a lot to hide and even more to answer for), but I think you missed my point so let me state it this way. If you look deep enough and think hard enough you can make any issue a black and white / racist issue. For example, while I do not think that the lady with the white mental illness sign was racist and maybe could have expressed herself differently while expressing her same idea. There were some people (and I know it went both ways) who agreed with what they thought she was saying even before she explained what she was trying to convey. Yes there are quite a few racially biased/charged events out there, but I didn’t think that this one was one of them. We sometimes tend to give people who agree with us a free pass while going after those that disagree with both barrels and it never occurs to us that we are just as guilty… if not worst. So I’m not saying that discrimination (in this case racism)doesn’t exist as I have been the victim of it more than once, but what I was saying was that the PLP was made fun of in the past and the OBA was made fun of this time. If you didn’t like how it was done or if it didn’t go far enough for you does not make the float makers or the organisers racist and to accuse someone solely on those grounds (from how I interpreted the comments) is suspect.

        • Creamy says:

Was Peggy’s poster “subliminal racism” as well? Or was that “blatant racism”?

        • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Never mistake knowing our history, with living in it. Our history is our unchangable past, our present is how we choose to live today and our future will be a reflection of how we choose to live today. It is obvious to all that you still choose to live in the past that no longer exists today, but don’t expect the rest of us to live in it with you, we are trying to ensure our children have a better future, resolved and freed from the mistakes of the past. More even now, than anytime in our history, we are on our way to true equality, and true equality is the freedom to succeed or fail by ones own merits, or faults, and how and by what you measure success with is a reflection of where your true values lie.

“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind….” Marcus Garvey, Nova Scotia, October 1937

    • Tony says:

What are you talking about? Take a closer look at the men that are on the Dunkley Milk raft. They clearly don’t support the PLP. If you care to read they are making fun at the OBA not the PLP. The OBA has lost a Premier, Ministers, MPs, a party chairman and voters faster then any party in history. The party is self destructing. You know it’s bad when their own supporters are lol.

      • Errin Butterfield says:

By taking a closer look what is it about the men on the Dunkley Milk raft that makes it clear that they don’t support the PLP?

        • Ringmaster says:

Keep up with current affairs please. Clearly Tony’s comment is because CURB says white people only vote OBA. Duh.

        • Lets keep it real says:

Don’t you know that 95% of whites don’t support the PLP. Where have you been living Darrell’s Island?

          • Kunta says:

Ya because they saw what happened to Dr. Barbara Ball, if you’re white and you support P.L.P or de Union you will be shunned by the white society but if you’re black and support White entities the Black community is still loving, what a contrast.

            • James Herald says:

PLP for many years now has made it quite clear that they have nothing at all to offer white people. They have been unashamed about this – so the fact that whites generally do not support PLP is of their own making and not really surprising at all.

The most recent example of this is how PLP handled the PRC issue. They repeatedly said that the PRCs are mostly white, and that they should not be given status. Next they will probbaly wonder why these PRCs don’t vote for them. This ain’t rocket science Kunta. PLP directly caused this to happen. But since you have said that Nonmariners never make fun of whites, you are obviously very young – or just incredibly unaware.

            • Franklin Jr says:

ahhyes, “white” society, unchanged from the beginning of time

90% or more of those people are DEAD. Stop chasing ghosts and live your own life here in 2014

          • Creamy says:

Maybe the PLP should think about ways to broaden their appeal.

          • Errin Butterfield says:

I would like to and I am tempted to have a constructive discussion with you but firstly I don’t have any discussions with people who hide behind a pseudonym secondly your sarcasm is unwarranted. By the way your comment states “95% of whites”. Do you know that 95% of whites doesn’t mean all whites?

    • long bay trading co. says:

LAMO2 for your sake get a life. How you can see such evil in such innocent fun is VERY VERY sad………….as Bob Marley said – FREE YOUR MIND, EMANCATE YOUR OWN SELF …………….for your sake you are the MASTER OF YOUR OWN DESTINY…..NO ONE ELSE………..take charge and be in charge ……stop being a victim and take control…..it is as you will make it….

  5. LMAO fi reel says:

EMANCIPATION my foot. They are still in charge, we do what they do and we are devils, race scaremongers, incitement etc. They do it to us its as the announcer calls it “political satire” . Lets see if Susan Jackson will call out Somerset Cricket Club and Non Mariners race for their attendees “White Mental Illness” bandwagon. Of course, if she was, she would of done so by now as she was quick to chastised the People’s March. They have us do divided against each other that we don’t know how to support and be fair. And to think some complains about the boating yachting community not as accepting of us but they send us out to shield them and we march on like their programmed robots.

    • Toodle-oo says:

I suppose you’ve got too many self inflicted hang-ups and are too young to remember that entirely white cast who put the ‘Not the um-um’ shows together for years and years where 90% of the show was political satire against the UBP.

And everyone LOVED it . Especially those damn whites .

    • Maggie May says:

What happened mate……..you so angry……your team must have lost!

      • LMAO fi reel says:

no mate, we’re still celebrating our win and keeping the cup. Amazingly PMD is stating that the mild cartoon is funny and his supporters are saying how wonderful of him to have such a good sense of humour, but there’s not joke on PMD only PCC (the black disposed Premier that the White Premier replace)

So of course PMD is pleased that they managed to poke fun at Mark Bean and Craig C and not Michael DUnk.

      • LMAO fi reel says:

WTH are you trying to say? Have another drink.

    • long bay trading co. says:

sad,sad………..go and LISTEN, TRUELY LISTEN TO BOB MARLEY – he said it right and was trying to send a message to all VICTIMS – percevied or otheriwise………………listen to the MAster….

  6. I SEE SAID THE BLIND MAN says:

Let me say that I have not seen any of this years floats so if there was something racially insensitive I would hope that the those responsible as well as the organizers publically apologize and ensure that there are some guidelines put in place to prevent this from happening in the past. As a person of mixed race I was personally offended at the sign that was allowed to be displayed at the PC march and would not want others to feel like that language and behavior is okay.

Now, what I would say from years of attending the event in the past there have been many floats over the years poking fun at politicians from all parties and all walks of life , including Mr. Dunkley? Most politicians would tell you that they accept it as being a part of their thankless job.

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

I don’t know about a “thankless job”…politicians get paid big loot by the taxpayers purse for doing nothing but bitch and carry on with each other!

  7. Raymond Ray says:

As I’d mentioned in response to another article when I wrote about the ostrich burying its head below the ground thinking this way no-one will see it…Like the ostrich, some people may hide their head but their “behinds” are quite visible to everyone else :-( Why use pseudonyms if you mean what you write? Be real and stop the “crap”.

    • Errin Butterfield says:

      Ditto

    • No Voice says:

We are afraid of the retaliation. No jobs, no opportunity for black people when they speak up.

They get “marked” and that’s the end of career opportunities not only for them but for their children and family.

  8. Terry says:

Looks like everyone has had too much swizzle and weed.

All the likes and dislikes coming from the same cellphone tower/tans/receive.

    Bermuda is fu08.
    Shalom.

    Gee only two floats ?

  10. Left arm spinner says:

What a great Non Mariners Day,the SBC deserves big credit for organizing such a good event.Congrats to Commodore Mike Butterfield and his entire team.Everyone enjoying themselves in peace and harmony, cannot wait for next year !

  11. Sparky says:

Anyone see the Mark Bean Ganja TEA POT float ? It was so high that Bermuda Air-traffic picked it up on Radar………HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  12. somuchless says:

I got there at 3 and it was packed. Everyone having fun. Good afternoon indeed.

  13. William says:

wow photos of only two non mariners boats…sadly it seems that this tradition is being lost to what seems like 15yr old drunk kids having fun

  14. Alvin Williams says:

Making fun of the politicians is great political commentary and there is really no defence against it once you are made the target. That is something I found out early in political writing. For years the non-mariners race has had one target and one target alone and that is from within the black community; it was almost as if this was a way the white community was able to get back at the black community especially when it comes to politics or trade unionism led by the BIU. But not this year there seem to be a dearth of political commentary; I guess because they now have he leader that the polls have always indicated that they wanted. But it should have been the year of many themes; Jet-gate; the resignation of a premier to name just a few; but than what they say about one dog biting their own?

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Quite the myopic view of the event you have come to hold, I wasn’t there for this year and even from the photos I can see how wrong you are. The fact of the matter is that this event has always been a forum for political punning, from back to the UBP days, through the PLP and now onto the OBA. To say that there is any sort of discrimination as to who gets targeted for the punning shows that you have obviously never paid very much attention to the full myriad of floating puns in the event over all the years it has been running. That fact that all you perceive from it is some form of race based attacking is a greater reflection of your own views of the world, and not necessarily the world as it exists.
