Video: 2014 Youth Olympics Opening Ceremony

The 2014 Youth Olympic Games got underway on Saturday [Aug 16] in Nanjing, China, with seven of Bermuda’s top athletes set to compete the best junior athletes from around the world.

Bermuda is being represented in four sports by seven athletes, with Faheemah “Kyrah” Scraders [athletics], Jah-Nhai Perinchief [athletics], Kionje Somner [athletics], Cecilia Wollmann [sailing], Jesse Washington [swimming], Erica Hawley [triathlon], and Tyler Smith [triathlon] all in China set to compete against the best of the best from around the world.

Bermuda’s flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony, as depicted above, was Kyrah Scraders, who will represent us in the 800 meter race. She started her track career at the age of 7 with the Pacers Track Club and began to represent Bermuda at the international level at age 13, and since that time has won numerous medals.

The Youth Olympic Games are held every four years, welcoming international competitors aged 14 to 18. The first summer Youth Olympic Games were held in Singapore in 2010, with the Winter Games following in Austria in 2012. China is hosting the 2014 edition of the summer Games from 16 August to 28 August.
