Bermuda On “Eight Weirdest Flags” List
Bermuda has managed to be listed on an article dubbed “The eight weirdest flags the world has ever seen” posted on i100, a new venture from the UK’s Independent.
Bermuda’s flag is listed alongside seven others the article deems weird, including Mozambique, which they said was the only national flag in the world to feature a modern assault rifle, and Hawaii, which they said still bears the Union Jack in its top corner despite never being part of the British Empire
As it pertains to the island, the article said, “Bermuda’s flag bears the British red ensign and a coat of arms that shows the 17th century ship Sea Venture that was deliberately crashed by Admiral George Somers in a bad storm.
“But the flag also bears an ironic resemblance to the Atlantic island’s reputation for being a hotspot for lost ocean vessels and aeroplanes.”
one word..Bollocks!
Bollocks indeed .
a) Sir George Somers did not deliberately crash his ship onto the rocks
b) the depiction of the ship on the rocks in the flag is from a much earlier and lesser known wrecking incident .
and the lion?
It’s not a lion
We can change to suit so that it would not be deem weird to one or those to whom weird is a word utilised contemporarily with conotation that has evolved from olden days…this really is an interesting word it has an alusive truest meaning the all but extinct by 16th century then used in description by shakespear in scots to describe twin sisters…or sisters…it’s current meaning is condensed and has a shallower rudimentary implication when utilised by a miopic ….I don’t know maybe it is…..I prefer to think it as being unique and less genaric…..if anything I would embelish and ornate…I have three family crests in my family…perhaps a few more…but three and coat of arms for each…..and I say this to be unique ….as people are unique…each arnd every one.
Sir George Somers did not deliberately crash his ship onto the rocks
Actually there is a great deal of evidence that says he DID indeed crash it into the rocks on purpose, where the ship ended up, and is the reason the passengers were able to salvage most of their supplies and stores….the most important of which were the tools neceesary to make another boat.
I love our flag. I have been overseas playing golf and been asked many times about the flags sewed onto my golf caps. I tell anyone who will listen that the red thing is NOT a lion though….it is a Sea Monster. Lions aren’t red. Dragons and logically by extension….Sea Monsters, can be. Much cooler to have a Sea Monster than a lion.
They should have left their list at 7, since there’s nothing weird at all about the Bermuda flag.
Why not Libya for being the only nation with a flag that’s essentially a green tablecloth?
Why not British Indian Ocean Territory for the capacity of making someone seasick if they look at it too long?
Why not Saudi Arabia for being the only nation whose flag is a message?
What an absolutely dumb reason to claim the Bermuda flag is weird. Nothing weird about it all. All the other ones posted I can see but Bermuda? Really? Was this Evan fellow bored and couldn’t bother to find another flag to use instead. What a moron.
Ho is going to defend Scotland when they go independent.
