Lady Remanded For Trespass, Stealing Pizza

September 24, 2014

A 58 year old woman appeared in Magistrates Court, where she was remanded in custody after she admitting trespassing at Arnolds in Sandys in July 2014 and stealing pizza valued at $3.99.

Karen Henderson was remanded in custody after she had pleaded guilty to three charges: stealing a pizza valued at $3.99 and trespassing on Arnold’s property on two occasions in July.  Ms. Henderson had previously been banned from the premises, having been delivered a letter informing her she was banned from entering their premises.

Asked to explain her actions, Ms Henderson told the Magistrate, “I was hungry. I’m not working. How can I pay when I have no money?”

Ms Henderson’s speech was somewhat hard to understand at times, and the Magistrate asked Ms Henderson if she had been drinking, and Ms Henderson replied, “I’m just tired.”

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ordered that a Social Inquiry Report, a Psychological Report, and a Bermuda Assessment Referral Centre report should be prepared on her, and remanded her in custody until 23rd October

The Magistrate explained his remand decision was driven by his desire to see to it that Ms Henderson was delivered all the help possible. The Magistrate said that if the three reports were ready early, then Ms Henderson could be brought back to Court early.

Exclaiming that she didn’t “want to go to jail” and that she had “never been in jail before”; Ms Henderson was escorted from the Court by two female police officers.

At first I thought custody was s bit harsh however After considering the judge’s remarks I agrre. If she couldn’t afford food in the first place jail would provide her with sufficient food and shelter. It’s sad that we have people stealing pizza that is $4. We need to come up with a solution. We are one nation and somehow we need to help those in need. There are people who are struggling after loosing jobs and are trying to survive the best way they can.

    • Tricks are For Kids says:

However, if she does get locked up that $4.00 slice of pizza equates to how much tax payer dollars used to incarcerate her????….I agree with you 100%…we NEED a solution…..

    • Meh says:

add me to the list. just found out im losing my job soon. I hafe to try and flip the money i have saved so it dose not run out befor i get another job.

    • zikkii says:

Dont just say we need to help them , its obvious they need it. Thats now a mantra.Say exactly what should be done . Your contribution should be suggesting first not just saying the obvious its time to move I step further. We need full stories and these pple s backgrounds to such behavior. If it all emanates from drugs misuse, we need tight systems to stop infiltration of drugs into bda. DRUGS, DRUGS DRUGS are the source of bda socia decay. None of these govts, present and past are serious about tyightening the transortationmof drugs into bda. While individuals in the drug trade benefit, the country, social breakdowns and the costs of govt expenditure due to drug misuse is extremely huge.

Ridiculous! We have an ex premier living like a king, sitting on his oversized financial cushion, enjoying his government sponsored palace…all the other court jesters are in ny…and people in bermuda are going hungry.
Do you not have any shame?

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

You had several opportunities to VOTE the PLP out-of-power!! But they deceived the dumbed-down electorate!!

    • ole Onion says:

So true ! I wish I was under the umbrella of the UBA I mean OBA Friends and family . Lol lack of transparency. ! She should have went to Cliftons not Arnold’s !!!!

  3. We Are Not Amused! says:

    this elderly lady needs HELP!

OBA/plp/biu show how much you REALLY care about Bermuda’s people…DO SOMETHING!

  4. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Yo!!..didn’t you all get the memo ..? it is a crime to be poor now a days…but like you said we need a solution to a growing epidemic of POVERTY…just imagine if you can. being hungry as a hound dog, then finding yourself behind bars with someone turning the key,LOCKED UP in a room because of your human instincts of survival…lots more to be revealed…smh

    • sad day says:

It will be a sad day if Gov trys to stop me from fishing off the rocks to feed myself.

  5. Declan Harrison says:

I think if you read the article carefully, it’s apparent that this lady is in need of some kind of forced assistance. She clearly is not willing or in a balanced state of mind where she can seek out assistance by herself. I believe she will get the assistance she needs as a result of this court appearance. Allowing her to continue her lifestyle is not fair on her, and it’s not fair on plcaes like supermarkets.

  6. faith says:

Sounds to me more like as alcohol issue rather than one of poverty.

Many people are without work but that doesn’t mean they can just walk into an establishment, helping themselves to what they need free of charge.

The thing about being down and out is: you have to want to do the hard work to get back on your feet and many people are used to having a hand out.

  7. Aflaiyah says:

It’s a shame that for $4 this woman may (if not already) has a criminal record for theft. While the store has the right to prosecute and she did break the ‘no trespassing request’ Is this what Bermuda has resorted to. We send money all over the world and don’t take care of it’s own. If you are poor, black or white, dirty , untidy etc then you are discriminated against. This woman is not the only one stealing to survive. The ‘good book’ said ” when I was hungry you fed me, when I was sick you visited, when I needed a coat you gave me one” $4.00 wow less than a bus ride!

  8. more than enough says:

How much is it costing to house the elusive cannonier at clifton?
Does he ever plan to move out? While simultaneously bolstering his bankbook from a country in debt, is this not theft of some sort? This guys history does not bode well for his trustworthiness, nor the history of his party who have broken most, if not all of their campaign promises so far. Not to mention sheilding their surrogate from public scrutiny, reminds me of the roman catholic church hiding perpetrators of all sorts of crap including pedophiles, by simply moving them into another position of authority, responsible for another set of unsuspecting followers, just to protect ” the good name ” of a corrupt organization.
He should completely resign, and hand all the money he has been paid by the government, along with eighteen months rent for clifton, also any money used flying around the globe or whatever other benifits which have been or are to be received by him, over to help the elderly the sick the poor and needy, and step off with whatever shred of dignity that he has left.
All politicians should follow suit where the money is concerned, how they expect to enjoy six figure salaries while the country sinks deeper and deeper into debt is beyond me.

  9. sad day says:

It’s a sad day when we’re prosecuting people for a $4 theft. Given, she should not be stealing, but a criminal record.. really?

  10. Hey says:

It’s only $4.00. Not that serious.

  11. Hurricane says:

Theft is serious. Sometimes sad but serious nonetheless

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

I do NOT consider $3.99 that serious!!! Now if it was $3,900 – then that would be a different case!!

  12. Disgust says:

And the murderers get bail !

  13. nana says:

I”m sure for a $3.99 pizza is going to cost us tax payers money that is totally a waste, that money what is going to cost to keep her could be used somewhere else of good cause. She just lost her 17 year old grandson and um sure her son needs her please have a heart. Please note i’m not saying that stealing is right, i just feel it could have been dealt in a different way.

  14. smh says:

Anybody from Somerset knows who the woman in this case is, and she does seem to be mentally unbalanced, for 4 dollars Arnolds probably shouldn’t have called the police, but it’s understandable that they wouldn’t want her on their premises, her antics might scare away some customers

  15. MAKE MY DAY says:

Even Wal-Mart in the USA and around the world – do NOT prosecute people if the value of any stolen merchandise is under $20!! This prosecution makes NO sense at all!! It must have cost $100′s of dollars to proceed with it!!

More waste of Tax Payers $$!!

  16. Frank says:

This lady admitted to tresspassing 2 times is why she was locked up not for stealing $3.99 pizza. It says she had a no tresspassing order on her not to go on the premises!

  17. Vanessa says:

If every single bermudian gave me one dollar it would make my day. I come from a poor country and have to help my family to make ends.

  18. ole Onion says:

Obviously there is a history between her n the shop ! She’s not stupid ! Just what she decided to do ! Mawi or jail !! people in need of food can get help from a few different places . hunger wasn’t the issue here . Her action was ! Let’s keep it real
