The Joint Statement follows below:
We the undersigned Leaders in Education come together collaboratively to mark the new beginning afforded educators every September. We recognize that while the process of education happens over an entire lifetime of the Human experience, it goes without saying that school serves an important part in the development of the upcoming generation.
We use this opportunity to remind parents that they have been their children’s first teachers and their roles remain key as that potential unfolds. Further to that, we recall the African proverb regarding the ‘role of the village’, confirming the responsibility of the wider community.
Increasingly that ‘village’ is becoming global and wider collaborative initiatives are becoming a part of the solution. This includes the development of free online support for learners – such as Khan Academy – which is facilitating the academic development of millions of students world-wide. Parents please make yourselves aware of this assistance by Googling Khan Academy.
Khan has developed a slogan for this new school year – you can learn anything. This reminds us of the wonderful potential of the human brain which like a muscle, expands its capacity when exercised through mistakes and challenge. It also reminds us educators that we are also ‘students’ as we evolve professionally.
As this new school year starts, we encourage all sectors of the community to join in this collaborative effort to maximize the potential of Bermuda’s most important asset, its people.
This is truly an exciting collaboration – I am so looking forward to hearing more from this group of progressive education leaders!
