North Village “Kicks For Cancer” Launched

October 1, 2014

North Village Community Club officially kicked off its 6th annual “Kicks for Cancer” campaign today [Oct 1]. During the month of October North Village’s Premier team and its Youth Program players will wear their signature pink jerseys in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Freisenbruch Meyer Group will once again partner with North Village by donating $100 for every North Village Premier team goal scored during the month of October. All proceeds raised will be donated to Bermuda Cancer and Health. An education session on the importance of breast cancer awareness is scheduled for the North Village youth program on Friday October 3rd.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre Education Officer, Gerri Landy, who will be leading the session, said “it’s wonderful to see that North Village is expanding the campaign awareness to their youth program so that the children can understand the importance of bringing forth awareness for breast cancer and how much the support is worthwhile and necessary”.

North Village Premier team defender DeVrae Tankard, who has been instrumental in the campaign, will also speak to the children about the history of the Kicks for Cancer campaign, why it was developed and why North Village continues to do it.

“We’re asking players as young as six years old to wear pink jerseys for the month of October”, Mr Tankard said. “It’s important that they understand the reasons we do it”.

North Village Vice-President Allan Young was on hand and said “North Village is so much more than a football club. We recognize that our influence can play a key role in the positive development of these children so that they can grow up to be caring and contributing members of our society. They are the next generation of mentors and it’s up to us to help make them successful”.

The first Premier game of the campaign takes place this Sunday October 5th at 3pm at Bernard Park against PHC. This match sees the island’s top two sides looking to establish themselves as the early season favourites.

PHC are undefeated in the league after two matches boasting hefty victories over their nearest rivals, Southampton and last season’s defending Champion in Dandy Town. North Village, meanwhile are undefeated in all competitions including their feats in the Dudley Eve group stages.

Both teams are scoring plenty of goals with North Village currently trailing their visitors on goal difference.

“We hope that sister clubs and the community at large will show their support this Sunday by wearing pink and coming to the game. It doesn’t matter what team you support, we can all come together in solidarity for a worthy cause” concluded Young.
