Over 75 Players In Squash Club Championships
The Bermuda Squash Racquets Association will be hosting the 2014 BCS-IBM Club Championships from November 23rd to 29th.
The tournament, which includes Men’s Open, Ladies Open, Men’s Veterans [45+] and Ladies Veterans [40+] categories will see over 75 competitors compete for the titles of club’s best in the upcoming week.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the BSRA hosting this event. Back in 1964, only a Men’s Open and Vets Championship was held, however, ladies categories were subsequently added from 1974 onwards.
“Many memorable names of players with illustrious careers dot the champions boards, including the Brewers and Kymes, a number of whom continue to compete for the top spot in the various men’s and ladies categories,” the BSRA said.
“Most recognizably, Nick Kyme, who far surpassed his father’s record of 7 titles, is looking to add a 14th to his name, after losing it for the first time last year to Micah Franklin. He will face stiff competition from John Fletcher, a former county player in England who is competing in his maiden event.
“Three-time winner Laura Robinson is seeded to play Susie Lacey in the finals of the Ladies Open, a very competitive field this year. In the men’s veterans categories, three Brewer brothers hope to battle it out to claim the title, while in the ladies veterans it is the in-form Denise Kyme who is slated to take the title.”
Assistant Director Runa Reta said, “We are delighted to have such a full and competitive field of players taking part in this year’s Club Championships. This is the last event of the calendar year for our adult members, so the players will be looking to end it on a high note.
“It is also fantastic to note that this tournament has been around for 50 years; I think this is a true testament to the consistently high level of interest and involvement in squash on the island”.
First round matches will begin on Sunday November 23rd from 12.30pm onwards. Results can be followed on their website.
