McCorkell Retiring After 24 Years At Warwick

Margaret [Maggie] McCorkell, Principal of Warwick Academy School announced this week that she will be retiring at the end of June 2016. Ms. McCorkell leaves after 40 years in education, 34 of them in Bermuda.
Warwick Academy, founded in 1662, is one of the longest continually operating schools in the western hemisphere.
Ms. McCorkell said, “The time has come for me to retire. I will leave Warwick Academy and Bermuda thinking the same thing I thought when I first arrived –that these are the best students I have ever seen!
“I have loved the many varied experiences I have had here in education, each one of them teaching me something new. It is now time for me to turn my thoughts towards travel and the other interests I have always dreamed of!”
Under Ms. McCorkell’s leadership Warwick Academy developed a 10 year strategic plan and a facility master plan. Warwick Academy re-introduced the Sixth Form and went on to receive the best examination results in the history of the school in both the International General Certificate of Education [IGCSE] and International Baccalaureate [IB] programmes.
Mrs. Angela Berry, Chair, Warwick Academy Board of Governor’s said, “Warwick Academy has benefitted greatly from Ms. McCorkell’s leadership. We are proud of her accomplishments and know that both staff and students, under her direction and tutelage, have flourished.
“Her unwavering commitment to the development of the whole person has made a huge difference in the environment of our school both for staff and students and in the way our school operates. She will be missed, and leaves big shoes to fill!”
Ms. McCorkell began her career in Northern Ireland at the Newtownbreda High School, moving to Tehran, Iran teaching English as a foreign language before finally settling on Bermuda in 1980.
Ms. McCorkell’s former positions include School Librarian, Teacher of Geography and English and a stint as Deputy Principal at St George’s Secondary School until 1990, prior to joining the faculty at Warwick Academy.
Mrs. Angela Berry added, “The process of finding and appointing a new Principal will begin in the new year and will include an extensive search of both internal and external candidates to find the right match.
“Education is a key measurement of success, and we want to be sure that students, staff and the Warwick Academy family all benefit from first rate leadership and direction.”
Wishing you all the best when the time comes, Maggie McCorkell… and thanking you for your contributions to one of the most critical elements of a child’s life… education. I hope that before you go we will see some movements in terms of overall educational reform… please be sure to add your voice in that discussion.
A brilliant teacher and an excellent administrator. We are fortunate to have had such an experienced and qualified and enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher like her in Bermuda who was loved by students, teachers and parents, alike.

Aunt Maggie as many in my year called you – all the best! You was definetly the best eacher and head of year – you encouraged and inspired many of us to press on and hold our heads high! All the best aunt Maggie!

Maggie is a great woman and in my opinion one of the greatest teachers Bermuda has seen. She has touched the lives of many over the last 3 decades. I love her! Thank you for everything you have done for me Maggie. You are an inspiration!
