Corporation Of Hamilton Suspends Meetings
The Corporation of Hamilton have given notice that all Council and Committee meetings have been cancelled until further notice, which was effective as of January 19th.
Noting that in 2013 the Municipalities Act 1923 was amended to include a number of good governance documents, the Corporation said “non-compliance by some members has been a significant challenge” and so “for good order and discipline the Mayor has cancelled all committee and council meetings for the next six weeks.”
“During this time it is expected that members of the Corporation of Hamilton would pause to review the Code of Ethics and Conduct and reflect on the way they have conducted themselves as Members,” a statement from the Corporation added.
The notice, as issued by the City, is below:
In response to questions seeking clarification, a statement from the Corporation said: “The Mayor of the Corporation of Hamilton today advised that in 2013 the Municipalities Act 1923 [PDF] was amended to include a number of good governance documents.
“One of these documents was the Code of Ethics and Conduct for Members of the Corporations. This document was timely as non-compliance by some members has been a significant challenge.
“This challenge was highlighted at a recent meeting of the Corporation so much so that for good order and discipline the Mayor has cancelled all committee and council meetings for the next six weeks.
“The Corporation Members are responsible for creating and amending policy and are not responsible for any of the day to day administration of the city.
“The suspension of meetings in not expected to have any operational impact as the city is administered by the staff under the direction of the COO & Secretary of the Corporation.
“During this time it is expected that members of the Corporation of Hamilton would pause to review the Code of Ethics and Conduct and reflect on the way they have conducted themselves as Members.”
“It is my hope that when the meetings resume in March, the Members will be prepared to work in compliance with the Code.
Well jeez guys, how are you going to handle the conference of black mayors that was rescheduled for next month?
Do us all a favour and make the cancellation permanent.
And please get our $150,000 back. (as the money vanishes permanently into thin air…..)
The Ringmaster shut the circus down for six weeks. Where am I to get my entertainment during that time. With a pending election in May I was looking forward to all the tom foolery in the lead up.
pretty much Lord of the Flies over at city hall.
Oh Krusty you are funny!
You take incompetence to a whole new level of ineptitude.
Please ride your donkey off into the sunset and stop embarrassing us all.
Sounds like the Mayor is sick and tired of being ignored and steam rolled by Donal and Co.
How’s that Conference of Black Mayors organization going by the way? Any chance it will actually happen or did your boys hand over rate payers’ funds and got ripped off?
They are using some “BIG WORDS”there, that most of the members would not understand.
Like the Huge Civil Service they need at least SIX WEEKS to catch themselves.
Never, Never has anyone seen such a bunch of clowns running the COH before! For the Taxpaying people who voted them in they need to re-visit their decision. It is embarassing to the point of ridiculous.
The CofH should be disbanded and the Mayor Fired and barred from holding any and all public offices in future.
As for the Conf’ of Black mayors, that will NEVER happen inn Bermuda.
The CofH gor scammed and everyone knows that.
Certain members’ refusal to abide by a Code of Conduct certainly didn’t stop them from collecting fat attendance cheques. What a disgrace and embarrassment for the voters and taxpayers.
The PLP’s continued silence on this issue speaks volumes regarding their tacit approval of this childish and petulant behaviour accompanied by a total local of accountability & transparency.
Well, this is interesting.
I wonder what’s next.
What I like about this announcement is that something constructive is being attempted. Whether the results will be positive is in the hands of each of the members of that collective.
Well, hello there Mayor! Have a nice nap did you?
Donal and Carlton…. mission accomplished return to Alaska Hall
best decision made during his tenure as mayor.
Sadly, this state of affairs is really affecting the COH staff who witnessed the rankling between elected members when they all gathered on the steps of City Hall last week to have a team photo taken. It was obvious to all that certain elected members refused to sit with or near each other. Some team! Their behaviour was shameful.
We read these very negative comments about the Black Mayor’s Conference scheduled for next month and what we need now is a full and frank statement from the Mayor about all the preparations, expenses incurred so far; numbers who have confirmed attendance; how many rooms have been booked at the Fairmont Southampton Princess; how much has Government and the City invested in the event, and what are we going to receive for the spending of our tax payers dollars. This event could be the crowning glory of the Mayor and his Council. On the other hand …
Chase them crazy bald heads out of town!
Unfreakinbelievable!
They should all be sent to the head teacher’s office and given lines or a good spanking…
When do we get rid of this sorry bunch of losers
I think many people would like to know when the next corporation election is due ? Anyone know ?
These guys are hilarious.
They are spending the Hamilton Tax Payers $$$ like “drunken sailors”!! I would NOT call that hilarious if I was a tax Payer!!!
They will still retaliate upon their return.
Rewrite the regulations on conduct to oust any member that does not follow the CoC.
The inmates are running the asilem
Code?? The members don`t care about code, never have and never will !! This is why CoH is in the mess its in ! Please Charles, please, please get back in there !!
Why does BDA still have the same municipal structure as it did 200 years ago? The whole island is now built up and everyone expects the same services, so having two corporations inside nine unincorporated parishes makes no sense. Either abolish all of it to save duplication or incorporate the whole island into 4 or 5 municipalities that make sense (eg, Hamilton, Somerset, west end, east end, St. George’s).
Time for Outerbridge and the rest of the corporation clowns to resign and hold new elections!! They have completely lost their integrity and BDA’s respect-in-general!!
Everything they now do and say is “suspect”!!!
