Richard Thomas Dies Following Road Collision
[Updated: Police confirm the death of 59 year old Richard Thomas of Paget]
Police warn that as of 6.15pm on Monday evening [Jan 12], there are traffic diversions in place on Middle Road, Warwick [by Belmont] due to a collision. Further details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.
Update Jan 12, 6.55pm: The collision appears to have involved a car and a motorcycle. We are expecting to receive a police statement shortly, and will update as able.
Update Jan 12, 7.15pm: The police confirm that a 59 year old Paget man died as a result of this collision.
Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place at 5.55pm on Middle Road in Warwick just adjacent to Dunscombe Road.
“It appears that a 59 year old Paget man was traveling on the road when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a car. The 59 year old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“No further info will be given until the next of kin has been notified. This marks the second road traffic fatality in 2015,” added Mr Caines.
“The Forensic Support Unit, in conjunction with traffic collision investigators, are currently processing the scene and as a result, traffic is being diverted in the area.”

Update Jan 12, 8.35pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 5:55pm on Monday, January 12th first responders attended a reported serious two vehicle collision on Middle Road in Warwick near the junction with Ord Road.
“It appears that a motorcyclist, believed to be a 59 year old Paget man, was riding along Middle Road when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a car. He apparently succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
“No further information regarding the deceased will be given until the next of kin have been notified.
“Motorists should expect significant traffic delays in the area and are encouraged to use alternate routes while traffic collision investigators process the scene.
“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to the victim’s family to assist them at this difficult time and a full investigation into this fatal collision is underway.
“The Bermuda Police Service continues to appeal for any witnesses to this fatal collision to contact PC Walter Jackson at the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011 or via email wjackson@bps.bm.
“This is the second road fatality for 2015.”
Update Jan 12, 9.32pm: A police spokesperson said, “The section of Middle Road in Warwick temporarily closed due to tonight’s fatal road collision has since been re-opened to normal traffic flow. The Bermuda Police Service appreciates the patience and cooperation of the motoring public who were inconvenienced.”
In addition, police have appealed to people to please not pass around a graphic image of tonight’s collision, saying the image began circulating before the man’s family had even been formally notified. If you receive the photo, please delete it.
Update Jan 13, 11.56am: The police have now identified the victim as 59 year old Richard Thomas of Paget. The full police statement follows below.
The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 59 year old Richard Thomas of Paget and extends condolences to his family and friends.
Mr. Thomas was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car around 5:55pm Monday, January 12th on Middle Road in Warwick near the junction with Ord Road.
He was subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital at 8pm Monday.
A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to Mr. Thomas’ family to assist them at this difficult time and a full investigation into this fatal collision is ongoing.
The investigating officer Constable Walter Jackson is urging any witnesses to this fatal collision that have not already come forward to contact him at the Roads Policing Unit on telephone number 247-1230 or via e-mail wjackson@bps.bm.
The death of Richard Thomas marks the second road fatality for 2015.
This marks the 2nd road death of 2015, and the fourth in the past two weeks following after the death of 33 year old Jereme Cumbermack due to a collision on January 5th, the death of 19-year-old Stephen Edwards due to a collision that occurred on December 30th, 2014, while 62-year-old Timothy Wright died following a two-vehicle collision on December 31, 2014.
