March 20, 2015

[Updated with slideshow + videos] A portrait of former Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, painted by Bermudian artist Che Caines, was unveiled at the Cabinet Office today [Mar 20] joining those of his predecessors.

Dr Brown portrait march 2015 (2)

Prior to the unveiling, Dr. Brown remarked, “Our period in office was characterized by action and execution with a special emphasis on giving opportunities to those who regardless of their intellect and talent, had been denied in the past. We chose to support a young Bermudian talent and I am extremely pleased with the result.

-

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve as Bermuda’s Premier, for the work that was achieved and for the people who helped to make it possible.

“I am looking forward to sharing this very special occasion with the old Cabinet team, former Parliament colleagues, supporters, family and friends. While one man’s picture goes on the wall, it was the work of many that made it all possible,” Dr. Brown concluded.

    Congrats to you Dr. Brown.

    • Facts over Political hats!! says:

Congratulations Dr Brown. One of our most forward thinking leaders of all time. The power to lead that few have today.

Thanks Dr Brown for selecting another local talent to do your portrait. Excellent job Mr. CaInes. Brilliant work that reveals a brilliant leader. Brilliant leaders are often not love by all, but the are by most.

      • Kangoocar says:

How many names do you post under Betty/ Alaska hall??? Being you would have difficulty counting past ten, you will say ten???

        • Facts over Political hats!! says:

Sad that @Kangoocar and other paid bloggers for the OBA would take away a valuable moment to praise this young artist. Instead he and the other diehard paid bloggers instead decide to take on political attacks on Dr. BROWN. Really unreal at best…..

WHAT it does say is that Dr Brown still has a strong present in Bermuda. I think there is fear that such a powerful leader will return.

Maybe he will……and that’s why OBA are working so hard even today to still discredit him…….it’s killing them….Dr Brown still holds power over them, just the mere fact they spend time talking and writing about him…..I love it……if not why waste time writing such unnecessary commentary. …….

If one has nothing nice to say….it’s best to say nothing. ..

      • 32n64w says:

Applaud the decision of using a Bermudian artist for this portraiture after Dr. Brown considered artists in Canada, the U.S. and Jamaica previously.

Shame the PLP decided to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars outsourcing the statue of Dame Lois to a non-Bermudian (who did a horrendous job) instead of relying on local, world renowned talent.

But I guess it’s ok when “they” do it, eh Betty?

        • But Mr.Speaker !! says:

OBA blindeyesFaithfulness is killing you and kangaroocar. …really

Enjoy the brilliance of Dr Brown and praise the work of the young artist CaInes. ….stop with your side shows of jealous nonetheless nonsense. …really

          • 32n64w says:

Typical response. Avoid the FACT the PLP chose a non-Bermudian to render Dame Lois. You have absolutely zero credibility.

          • Kangoocar says:

Forget which computer you used when you posted this latest nonsense?? How the heck does Alaska hall/plp think they are ready to be the government again when they can’t even keep track of which computer they are using when they post their usual nonsense?? “Mr. Speaker” and “facts over political hats ” came from the same computer?? Once again confirming what I asked, but of course nobody ever gets a real answer from the plp?? When in power they didn’t really answer the questions ( plantation question!! ) was the plp most used response to deflect and hide from telling the truth!!!

            • Facts over Political hats!! says:

Why because you post under several names….like Westpalm etc …..stop it …your fooling yourself only….your bitterness is telling….

              • Creamy says:

Which name are you using today? But Mr Speaker? Facts over hats?

Come out from under the hoods.

      • Reverse says:

@Facts over Political Hats. Forward thinking you say? He took us back! In 14 years we saw was the decline of the economy, tourism, education, employment, international business, our peoples health and lets not forget $800 Million that the Auditors can not account for? That’s forward thinking?

      • jt says:

        Three names…same computer…purpose Betty?

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!!

    • Mockingjay says:

Even though I didn’t agree with some things he did or said, what I can say is he didn’t take no S!@# from the Elitist who had control over this Island for the last few centuries.
Giving names to buildings that gave Honor to those who were instrumental in the Building and Trailblazing of this beautiful Island was something unprecedented which a lot of people were not accustomed too and which is common in most countries.
He tried to wake up a sleeping people who were in a trance by the psychological inferiority complex that was systematically engrained in our culture and society from its conception.
That’s why he is WIDELY hated by a certain segment of society and his OWN.
That’s why I could only just imagine what the days of Dr. Gordon and them who defied the Fear Factor of their oppressors and did not sway from their conviction in the presence of Threats, Hate and Economic Genocide.
And I know this is uncomfortable for some, even African Bermudians but that’s the ideology we’ve embraced.
So instead of getting caught up in cedar beams and how he caused the World Recession, think of how Liberated in your mind you can be to advance in a society that is supposed to offer equal opportunity.
“We have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the present and the future.”
      Frederick Douglass

      • Reverse says:

Mockingjay, keep blowing smoke, it does not work any longer. He is hated by some because the perception was that he hated anyone that did not look like him, think like him, questioned him or was not part of his political party.

Should we embrace him even though almost every major contract for government projects initiated by his government was awarded to his fellow party friends and family some without a fair tendering process. TCD, Bermuda Emissions, Port Royal, Globalhue, Faithbased Tourism, Dockyard Cruise Pier and Berkeley to name a few. By the way, why do we even need Bermuda Emissions? It is a widely known fact that they is no base level for car emissions anyways so cars / truck don’t fail for that. In Deluth Georgia where for a few years I lived, I could go the some mechanic shops or the gas station and get an emissions test!

Should we embrace him for being a part of the group that stripped the Bermuda Cement Co of their business (even though they had done a great job) and handed over to friends.

Should we embrace him for the comments he made about some of our people.

Should we embrace him for deceiving us (his own words) and how should we he feel about the secret deals he made that affected us – like the Quigars.

So forgive me for defending those who were not like him…you know those he didn’t exactly love.

That being said, in all fairness he did do a few good things. While I didn’t agree with the TCD contract process (or lack thereof) the end result and changes at TCD are a huge improvement.

      • jt says:

Dr. Brown is very intelligent and calculating. I think your analysis is far too simplistic and doesn’t give him full credit for what he truly managed to accomplish.

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

Like the $2+ BILLION debt that the Island is now facing!!!

  2. LiarLiar says:

Not a fan of Dr. Brown or what he did to Bermuda.

But Mr. Caines appears to be a talented artist.

    Well done sir.

    • Robert says:

What did doc brown do to Bermuda ?

      • Onion says:

He bankrupted it. The huge spending increases that lead to our current debt took place under his watch.

      • Mockingjay says:

Ask Scotland Yard, but no matter who you bring in they will still fabricate something to Hoodwink the people, and it worked cause those who voted these Dreamers in and stayed home are kicking themselves in the @$$.

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

The right question should be….What didn’t he do??

  3. mr speaker says:

not a fan of Dr.Brown but great job Mr. Caines.

  4. TonyC says:

He is a good artist, but a shame he only caught one face, not both.

  5. C James says:

Looks like an excellent likeness to me. Besides, I’d rather we have the painting here than the real thing. The painting can’t do any damage!!!

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

      C. James, Dr. Brown still lives in Bermuda. So now you have the painting and the man here.

      • Terry says:

        Lol LaVerne.

We still have both of you but no portrait in the House nor anywhere else.
        Irony.

        Maybe BIU?

      • 32n64w says:

Dr. Brown remarked that he spends much of his time in Turks and Caicos (even mentioned his “good friend Michael Misick” in a related interview) before adding, almost as an afterthought, that he also spends time on island. Interesting.

      • idiotpatrol says:

        Real shame that!

        • MAKE MY DAY says:

Isn’t Misick facing charges for defrauding the Island and it’s citizens of $$ millions?? I’m still waiting for the *Trial*!! Remember he ran off to Brazil – and was deported back to face his alleged crimes!!

Some people have very short and convenient memories!!

  6. Christopher Grimes says:

    Congrats Che, great work!

Thank you to Dr Brown for selecting a Bermudian artist!

  7. KE says:

Didn’t your mother tell you if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all? Maybe that’s the problem we face as Bermudians/as a people. We can NEVER look at things from another perspective. We constantly view the cup half empty. Can we for once be positive?? So what if you don’t like Dr. Brown who cares. Speak to the good and leave the rest on the shelf.

    • TonyC says:

Who cares? Massive national debt and unemployment due to HIM and you ask who cares???

      • Miss. T.H. says:

PLP whilst under the leadership of Ewart Brown accomplished many forward thinking goals which benefitted middle class Bermudians.
        -Free transport, education, and nursery
-Bermuda received international exposure whilst PLP was in power

        to name a few.

I’m not here to bash UBP, the fact is let us not forget the damage and destruction which still ripples Bermuda and it’s community; actions and decisions which have been at the hands of UBP.

NOW. You show me one country which is not in debt as a nation. The economic climate is a world wide issue.

Word to the wise TonyC…didn’t OBA promise 2000 jobs on their platform…I recall that they have not lived up to this promise.

        • Voter (original) says:

Its not free. Someone has to eventually pay for it….

        • 32n64w says:

“PLP whilst under the leadership of Ewart Brown accomplished many forward thinking goals which benefitted middle class Bermudians.
          -Free transport, education, and nursery
-Bermuda received international exposure whilst PLP was in power

          to name a few.”

Those aren’t accomplishments if they aren’t sustainable. In truth, they were nothing more than short term vote grabbing exercises. And I doubt anyone would consider widely reported allegations of the PLP’s fiscal impropriety and malfeasance as positive press in the international media.

“I’m not here to bash UBP, the fact is let us not forget the damage and destruction which still ripples Bermuda and it’s community; actions and decisions which have been at the hands of UBP.”

And yet you wasted no time bashing a defunct political party in the SAME sentence. Please explain how developing a legislative framework that encouraged and fostered the establishment of a robust IB economy that continues to employ and provide thousands of Bermudians with opportunities and jobs as damaging?

“NOW. You show me one country which is not in debt as a nation. The economic climate is a world wide issue.”

Debt can be healthy, however, an unsustainable debt burden where the service costs negatively impact annual budgets and adversely hinder the delivery of social services to voters and their families is not.

Our debt burden is far and away significantly more burdensome than it is for other nations given our economic paradigm. While the widely developed U.S. Economy has flourished over the last four+ years, ours has stagnated due directly to the horrible decisions of the defeated PLP Government.

“Word to the wise TonyC…didn’t OBA promise 2000 jobs on their platform…I recall that they have not lived up to this promise.”

We’re not even half way through the OBA’s tenure so this comment is a non-starter. Unlike the PLP’s promises of zero based budgeting, accountability and the timely implementation of PATI; none of which transpired despite their public commitments to openness and transparency.

        • Trulytruly says:

It’s a crying shame that there are many that think this is true…no accountability. Remember as Paula cox publically stated a balanced budget wasn’t important to her. To the uniformed, with that attitude towards Bermudas financial state from the person in control of the money no wonder we end up where we are. And there are those that continue to ignore what got us here.

        • TonyC says:

And you show me one which went from so much wealth to so much debt in such a short period of time. Who pays for all that free transport, education and nursery??

The OBA have had 2 years to not only stop the loss of jobs, but to then start bringing them back. To my mind, they are doing an incredible job up to now, albeit with more than a few gaffes along the way.

If the PLP got back in tomorrow, it would be the death of Bermuda as we all know it. And that is Brown’s fault, and the mindset he created.

          • Mockingjay says:

A few gaffes is an understatement, they are Pathetic and Embarrassing, and the jobs your talking about is Friends and Family and the foreign worker.

        • foldgers says:

they took away that free college..the free transoportation cost us more as noone thought at the time to replace that revenue… and we went from under a half million debt to over a billion dollars debt.. can we at least just be for real

        • Reverse says:

          Ms. T.H.

I remember a time not so long ago when people paid for these things because we all had jobs and could save for them. In fact for years (pre-PLP)we were constantly on the top 5 list of countries with highest per capita income, best places to work, best place to live and more.

Many coutries like Canada have done very well while other countries suffered. Why , because the saved and spent wisely. There is nothing wrong with borrowing money, there is however, something wrong with borrowing when you can’t pay it back.

One last thing. Before the PLP years, employment was never a political topic because we all had jobs! The OBA had to promise jobs, because the PLP and their actions caused us to loose them! They pushed companies away. They did not close their doors! They left to go elsewhere!

        • Creamy says:

The “free transport” is another PLP myth. He promised but never did it.
As for the “free education” they did it for about a year and then reversed it. Couldn’t pay for it.

      • bermudaglobetrottersdotcom says:

And most who condemn the man, voted for him. Stop complaining, and move forward.

    • Um Um Like says:

      Idiot.

    • Huh says:

Dr Brown certainly didn’t follow your advice…..

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

There is NOT much “good” to speak-of with Brown!! We had to DECEIVE you all!! He did that one very well for 4 yrs and spent a TON of $$$ doing it!!

  8. Jeremy Deacon says:

I would so love to sit down with Dr Brown and do a really no holds barred interview.

    • Jeremy Deacon says:

      lol, ur funny.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

So what’s wrong with asking him Jeremy Deacon? He is one of the most approachable leaders that I have ever met, and I’ve met them all.

      • Family Man says:

Approachable? Isn’t he the one with the unlisted number? That pretty much tells you all you want to know.

      • jt says:

        Thus the body guards.

      • idiotpatrol says:

Keep drinking the Koolaid and spewing fibs Lavernne.

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

If you are the right colour and have the right agenda!!!

    • Onion says:

Why? What he says often has little relationship to the actual reality.

    • No doubt says:

I’m sure Dr. Brown would welcome the opportunity. Contact him and request an interview. Don’t just wish. Make it happen

    • swing voter says:

just don’t bother to ask the plantation questions LOLOL

      • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

Plantation questions are not good questions.

        • Sad says:

It’s not the questions you don’t like.

          It’s the answers.

        • idiotpatrol says:

          Please, just slink away.

        • It's about time! says:

What you choose to deem “not good questions” are labeled “plantation questions”…how convenient for you…

          • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

No, here for the final time is my definition of a “plantation question”:

A plantation question is one that is seldom asked of a white politician. It is a question that conjures up for me the situation that existed on the slave plantation. There, the relationship was a master-servant one. If I had to choose one of those roles it would not be “servant”.
An example of the questions that prompted my “plantation question” remark was this:

“Premier, did GlobalHue receive the tourism advertising contract because Don Coleman, the owner is Black?”

By the way, the suggestion that I am AFRAID to answer questions from any source is ludicrous. In fact I am prepared to go on camera, face-to-face with any number of the anonymous bloggers at a mutually convenient time. No hoods allowed though!

            • Never Never says:

Thank you Dr. Brown for being real all the time something these bloggers are scared of SMDH

              • Kangoocar says:

After you wipe the brown smelly stuff off your nose, can you open your eyes and ears and realize that you also are a HOODED one under the DREBS eyes!!! Do I really have to remind you that you are posting under the name never never?? If the dreb was honest?? He will back me up???

    • Terry says:

What questions would you ask Jeremy.

His answers would be truthfull or avoidance.

      Don’t waste your time.

      He will only deceive you.
      Shalom.

    • Think again says:

Tell you what Jeremy sit down with all the past leaders and UBP boys to ask them how they made their money and what deals were struck behind close doors. This was one of the reason the OBA got away from the UBP or so they claimed.

Also invite Dunkley so he can tell Bermuda the real reason why he brought craiggyyy cannonier back. It’s clear as night and day he could have chosen someone else as a Minister.

    • FiremanSam says:

And while your at it be fair and interview some of the past UBP Premiers and politicians and ask how they used public policy and the public purse to funnel money into their business interests. Keep the ball rolling in the name of fairness if you’re as objective as you want people to think!

    • Huh says:

Waste of time. Doctors are always poor political leaders. Good dictators. They are trained in a quasi military system. We all know it’s all about “him” and nothing about progressing Bermuda. Anyone with half a brain could see that all he sought to do was divide Bermudians and create and cultivate a poorly educated underclass reliant upon Govt. handouts while he partied with Misick & Beyonce and the rest of his elitists buddies.

      • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

What is it like living with half a brain?

  9. CountryGirl says:

Well Said KE!!!!! Who cares if you didn’t like the man!!! Just shut up or as we used to say. FLY OVER CHINESE KITCHEN ORDER FRENCH FRIES!!!!

    • Casual Observer says:

      Agreed.

However, that premise should apply to all.

Not just someone or some organization that one supports.

    • sigh..... says:

      i think it’s fly UNDER chinese kitchen….

    • Um Um Like says:

      Another idiot.

    • stunned... says:

      smh…showing age and grammar…

  10. Kangoocar says:

Looks like the artist captured the REAL size of his head??? Of course the ego is even bigger, but an artist can’t paint that??

    • stunned... says:

perhaps the artist was capturing his essence: the big-headedness?

  11. and iI'm sticking to it says:

You people…you are no different from what you claim he is with your derogatory comments.

    • Kangoocar says:

@sticking to it. Does the words ” we don’t care what you think ” ring any bells in your head???

      • and iI'm sticking to it says:

Dude, I think you totally missed the whole idea of my statement. In other words, two wrongs don’t make it right. You are pretty much in no better position character wise.

Come on these are simple lessons in life. Is applaud something you people seek to have by making negative statements about someone else?

        • Kangoocar says:

No, I think you missed the whole carnage to this island dreb created?? All living Bermudian great great grand children will be paying for his actions!!! I am sorry if you live in la la land, but I can assure you, those that are paying for the mess dreb created 100 yrs from now, will not be!!!

          • and iI'm sticking to it says:

Well, it is quite obvious commenting back and forth with you is a succession of wasted time. Missed the point….again.

you’d rather point back to the PLP/Dr Brown, I guess that is what you consider “moving forward”

Bermuda will be at a much worse state socially at this rate. Money will always be the root of social ills…

  12. somuchless says:

Che, you shoulda done a portrait of him sitting off by the pool in dubi or watching beyonce. lol

    • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

No, by the pool in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos would be preferred.

      • Kangoocar says:

        With your mate misick????

        • Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown says:

          We could arrange that!

          • idiotpatrol says:

Please make it a one way trip and stay there.

      • Raymond Ray says:

Dr. Ewart F. Brown you definitely have the gift of gab bie’…

        • Mockingjay says:

And none off you could stand toe to toe with him in a Debate, as a matter of fact I don’t think there is anyone in you party that can.

          • Onion says:

            True. I’m honest. That’s a handicap.

          • idiotpatrol says:

But they all have better grammar than you.

          • MAKE MY DAY says:

            Nonsense… Brown was a “first rate” BS’er!!

        • Ms. Poli Tician says:

“bie”? Unbelievable. Would you call a white former politician “bie”? Somehow, I think not.

  13. Lois Frederick says:

    Too much headroom. Oh well…

  14. Jus' Askin' says:

    GREATEST PREMIER EVER !!!!!
    :-D

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Greatest…not by a long shot. The worst for sure, with Paula Cox not far behind.

Remembered…yes. For all of the wrong reasons, not that he cares a hoot about anyone else or what they think of him. Certainly not the average person on the street. Generations to come will remember him & be paying for his presence in Bermuda.

      • Jus' Askin' says:

The last premier and the current are the Worst ;-)

  15. Ace girl says:

What an artistic talent, Mr Caines. You did a fabulous job.
OMG how can we possibly look at this portrait and not be reminded of all that took place. LaVerne you must get those blinders off, you know the black and white ones. It is absurd to hear you defending those that should not be defended.l

  16. Sparky says:

Looks like an OBA tie !

  17. Cow Polly says:

Could have said it better myself “Our period in office was characterized by action and execution with a special emphasis on giving opportunities to those who regardless of their intellect and talent……………. “

  18. Navin johnson says:

No offense Jeremy but I would rather have Scotland Yard interview him…..

  19. Artsy Onion says:

Sadly, it is to big in comparison to the other portraits that hang in the Cabinet office. It should have been life size, but then again Dr. Brown does have a huge ego. Otherwise, congrats to Caines.

  20. Never Never says:

@Kangaroocar so negative you said you were leaving change your mind lol no one missing you hahahahaha or you don’t have anyone that cares I know no one gives a ratts a@@ about you sad hahahahaha even with all that money SMDH

  21. Just Wondering says:

Great job Mr. Caines. Very talented young man.

  22. Rasta says:

Yeah Ewart, should have been done down in Provo with your buddy Michael. Birds of a feather …. you know the rest!

  23. D says:

    looks nice

  24. Huh says:

Good to have this portrait, a bit like the Cenotaph to remind us of those lost in 2 world wars….lest we foget

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

How could ANYONE forget what E. Brown did to BDA… on purpose I might add!! Remember… We HAD TO DECEIVE YOU!!

  25. Rhonnie aka BlueFamiliar says:

You know, I was, and remain, not a fan of Dr. Brown, however, he was the leader of our country and, as such, deserves the commemorative.

I applaud his choice of a local artist, and think a wonderful job was done.

  26. Bye darn de rerd says:

Two feelings which keep re-occuring; astonishment and disbelief!

  27. Heidi Skinner-Andrade says:

This commentary is so unnecessary. Who cares whether you like the subject of the painting? Let’s give credit where it is due. We should be applauding this talented Bermudian artist, Che Caines. Che I am very proud of you. It is an excellent rendering. You are truly blessed artistically, in many different mediums. So proud of all that you have achieved thus far and know you have much success ahead of you.

I believe we should expand Bermuda’s psychiatric capabilities to deal with persons who make statements such as this one!
