Football: Kappa Classic To Kick Off This Friday

March 18, 2015

The Kappa Classic will be held at the National Sports Center, starting this coming Friday [Mar 20] with the island’s football stars of tomorrow ready to showcase their skills.

A spokesperson said, “In 1999 the Heritage Scholarship Football tournament was taken over by the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Bermuda Alumni Chapter [BAC] with the objective of infusing fresh ideas to grow the event as well as to give the BAC a vehicle with which to work with and develop young people in the area of sportsmanship and achievement.

“The event’s origins showcased the talents of footballers between the ages of 7 and 12. The name was changed to the Kappa Alpha Psi Pee Wee Extravaganza. In the first tournament there were twelve boys’ teams competing in different age groups with the entire event taking place over a few hours on a Saturday morning.”

“Thanks to the vision of the committee and the fostering of great partnerships with businesses in the community and a team of dedicated volunteers, the event now takes place over three days and is competed for by over 1,000 kids [both boys and girls] between the ages of 7 and 14. There will be eighty six teams participating this year.

“In 2010 the event was renamed and it is now known as the Kappa Classic. It has grown to be the largest annual youth sporting event in Bermuda and highlights from the games can be seen on Youtube thanks to the local sports network BSN [Bermuda Sports Network]. 2014 saw the first international team enter and we are proud to again be hosts to the John Smith Soccer Academy [out of the New England Area in the US] who will bring three teams here to compete.

“The Kappa Classic will be held at the National Sports Center on Friday March 20th starting at 6pm, Saturday March 21 st starting at 9am [with Opening Ceremonies starting at 8:30am] and Sunday March 21 st starting at 9am for the semi final and championship matches.

“The event is free to the public and all are welcome. There will be plenty of food stalls [which are operated by the football clubs as an opportunity to raise funds for their programs], funcastles and plenty of football!
