Court: 22 Year Old Man Remanded Into Custody

A 22-year-old Southampton man was today [Apr 17] remanded into custody after several warrants of unpaid fines and missed trial dates were brought to light in Magistrate’s Court.

Keedai Astwood initially appeared before the courts today and pleaded not guilty to assaulting another man with intent to rob him on April 8 this year , and alternatively charged with the assault of the man, causing him bodily harm.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted Astwood $5,000 with one like surety under the condition he stay away from the complainant. The adjourned the matter until June 29 this year for trial.

Immediately after Mr Tokunbo granted Astwood his bail, several other matters were brought forward.

A warrant was previously issued for Astwood’s arrest due to a failed court appearance regarding a cannabis related trial last December. Also, four other warrants were issued for a total of $1,438 worth of unpaid fines.

Mr Tokunbo subsequently remanded Astwood into custody for the outstanding fines and missed trial date and adjourned the matter until April 27 this year. He was ordered to pay the outstanding fines immediately, or face 50 days in imprisonment.
