Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, including a gala celebration called “Le Diner en Rose,” held in the Victualling Yard in Dockyard and attended by over 300 guests, including dignitaries such as Deputy Governor Ginny Ferson and her husband and Gizette Canegata Thomas, the International Regional Director.

Mrs. Thomas hails from the island of St. Croix via Texas, where she resides. She is the first International Regional Director that is from the International Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha. This region is comprised of 437 members and encompasses 15 chapters in 9 countries outside of the USA.

In honour of the 25th anniversary, Sigma Xi Omega Chapter awarded financial presentations to The Hamilton Seventh Day Adventist GED Programme and to GreenRock. Earlier in the week donations were made to Age Concern [prescription cards], The Family Centre [BELCO vouchers] and Women’s Resource Centre [grocery vouchers].

On Tuesday, May 19, the celebrations culminated with a playground beautification community service project at Shelly Bay Park and the presentation of two benches in honour of the Chartering Members of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter.

A spokesperson said, “On the campus of Howard University in 1908, Ethel Hedgeman gathered together with eight Negro college women to breathe into reality her dream of a support network for like minded women. From this small group of nine, the first Negro Greek-letter sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority materialized.

“Eighty-two years later, on May 19, 1990, this now worldwide sorority landed and took root in Bermuda with a group of nineteen Bermudian women. This year Sigma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated celebrates twenty-five years of service to the people of Bermuda.”
