Mary Koenig Named New U.S. Consul General
Mary Ellen Noonan Koenig, a career diplomat in the United States Foreign Service, will arrive in late August to assume responsibilities as the U.S. Consul General to Bermuda.
“Her most recent assignment was as the Cultural Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow where she oversaw one of the U.S. Government’s largest public diplomacy programs overseas which included academic and professional exchanges, grants programs, English Language activities, and film and speaker programs,” the U.S. Consulate said.
“Her other overseas posts also focused on public diplomacy programming and included Pretoria, South Africa; Bern, Switzerland; and Berlin, Germany. Her Washington assignments included five years in the Bureau for Education and Cultural Affairs, as well as serving as the political desk officer for Ireland and Northern Ireland.
“Prior to joining the Department of State in 1993, Mrs. Koenig worked as a freelance writer and as a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mrs. Koenig received her Bachelor’s degree from Antioch College and has Master’s degrees from Washington University and the National Defense University.
“Mrs. Koenig will be joined in Hamilton by her husband Robert L. Koenig who is a writer and journalist. Mr. and Mrs. Koenig are both from St. Louis, Missouri. They have four adult children and one grandchild.”
Mrs Koenig will replace Robert Settje, who said his time in Bermuda has been “a wonderful experience from beginning to end.”
