Photos: National Heroes Induction Ceremony

June 15, 2015

[Updated with video] Gladys Morrell and Sir Edward Trenton “ET” Richards were officially inducted as Bermuda’s new National Heroes yesterday [June 14] with Minister of Community, Culture & Sports Patricia Gordon-Pamplin saying, “Our two National Heroes have both made politically and socially significant and profound contributions to our country.”

Minister Gordon-Pamplin said of the inductees, “Indeed, in their own special and unique ways they have embodied characteristics that define what it means to be a Bermudian National Hero.

“National Heroes Day is celebrated annually to honour and pay tribute to those persons who have been officially pronounced as National Heroes in Bermuda.

“The National Hero designation is a permanent honour that is bestowed, and once a person is named as a National Hero he or she will be a National Hero in perpetuity.

“Our two new National Heroes will now take their place in the hall of fame and forever be referred to as a National Hero of Bermuda.”

.

“Let me take this opportunity to officially acknowledge the families of Gladys Carlyon de Courcy Misick Morrell and Sir Edward Trenton Richards.

“The induction of our new National Heroes is very special for us. Our country owes the Matriarch and Patriarch of your respective families our deepest gratitude for their fearless and tireless efforts to create a more just and equitable society, whose political infrastructure remains today.

“Their fortitude and courage are testaments of their courage and their love of Bermuda and her people.

“I would also like to acknowledge and thank members of the community who nominated individuals for this prestigious honour as well as members of the Naming and Recognition Committee who scrutinized the submissions and made their recommendations to Cabinet.

“This ceremony is the culmination of combined community effort and involvement and is indicative of the pride that you, our fellow Bermudians, hold for our beloved country.

“To the families, I can recall sitting where you are right now and feeling the tremendous pride and overwhelming joy as my own Father was chosen to be forever one of our National Heroes.”

Did any PLP MPs attend? After all it was the PLP who changed the holiday from the Queen’s Birthday to National Heroes. Or does the PLP have their own requirements for National Heroes? If no PLP MPs attended then that is shameful and disgusting.

My Heroes fought and are still fighting for Equal Rights and Justice for the PEOPLE.
I guess anyone could be a hero now.

  3. Young Bermudian says:

We are not serious about National Heroes in Bermuda. As I have posted previously, the criteria for selecting National Heroes should be established with input from the public, private, non-profit, grassroots, government, opposition stakeholders. Like the islands of the south, these individuals should be celebrated and promoted well in advance of the weekend, so that Bermuda can truly honour their legacy. At present the majority of residents enjoyed holiday festivities and don’t have a clue who the holiday is for.
