Maine School Offer Scholarship For Boat Building
The Landing School in Maine is offering a scholarship to any Bermudian interested in boat building, with full year funding available for the next three academic years, beginning this fall.
The School is an accredited institution [accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges] that offers diploma and Associate’s degree curriculums with concentrations in four areas: Wooden Boat Building, Composite Boat Building, Marine Systems and Yacht Design.
Yacht Design
There is full year funding available for the next three academic years, beginning this fall. The Scholarship program has been funded for three years with the intent that it be dispersed to a different student each year.
A one year recipient may apply for the grant for a second year if they intend to complete the associate degree program which is two years. Ideally, the school would like to see three different students over the three years. This scholarship also covers tuition, books, tools, living expenses, and transportation.
“Scholarship funding has been made available by The Island Foundation who very generously extended the Bermuda Scholarship Program for three years,” explained Training Manager at the Department of Workforce Development Pandora Glasford. “The school is more than happy to call or Skype with potential candidates and their families to answer any questions they may have.”
Career Fair
The Landing School was established in 1978 as a nonprofit, post-secondary institution dedicated to providing the highest quality hands-on education in boat building.
“The Landing School’s aim is to bridge the gap between theory and practice, providing graduates with the skills and understanding necessary for current employment opportunities and future career growth,” explained a spokesperson from the School. “In as quickly as 10 months, our students are ready to enter the marine industry workforce with the skills necessary to not only succeed but excel.
Composites
“Students will attend classroom study each morning and in the afternoon apply what they’ve learned in the lab, working as individuals and in teams to execute their newfound knowledge. Students at the School spend upwards of 40 hours per week learning their craft.
“Students receive individual attention from instructors who are experts in their field and have a wide variety of knowledge to offer. This highly concentrated approach to learning and easy access to instructors ensures that students have the best possible chance to graduate with the greatest amount of knowledge.”
Students also have the opportunity to spend time in each of the other programs so they can see how the work they do fits in with other aspects of boat building, maintenance, and design. Field trips to regional boat building businesses and educational functions are interspersed throughout the curriculums for each of the programs.
Marine Systems
Additionally, The School hosts lectures and marine industry gatherings to which students are invited. These events provide students with the opportunity to meet and speak with professionals in the marine industry and potential employers.
Landing School students are a diverse group of adult learners, second career seekers, high school graduates, veterans and international students who share the same passion for all things boating.
Students at The Landing School come from a variety of countries including France, Spain, Israel, South Africa, Finland, United Kingdom, South Korea and Venezuela , to name a few.

Now, this is something for them that often say, “I’m bored ” In having learnt a bit about boat building while in my 30s (at Florida Fibreglass Company / Boat Yard on Stock Island.) It had been a great experience, opening my eyes to so much I thought I’ll never learn. It’s good hearing / seeing opportunities are now being offered to locals. My advice, go for it!
