Court: Father Admits Assaulting 6-Yr-Old Son
Appearing in Magistrates Court today [July 8], a 36-year-old man pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting another person and causing bodily harm on 6th July 2015. The person assaulted was his six year old son.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a Social Inquiry Report with a psychological assessment, adjourned the matter to 25th August, and granted him bail at $5,000 with the condition that he have no unsupervised contact with his son.
The Prosecutor told the Magistrate that on 6th July, he had punched his son in the chest, kicked him in the groin and head, and had knocked him down. The boy had suffered a bump on the head and one of his teeth had been loosened and required extraction. Other injuries required other medical attention.
A short one sentence statement from the boy and read in by the Prosecutor said, “My Daddy kicked me….”
The Prosecutor said that after being arrested by police, the defendant, who cannot be named, had admitted to investigating police that he had punched and kicked his son.
Explaining to the Magistrate, he said that he had other children, and the arrangements between himself and the boy’s mother had caused him frustration; and that he had gotten angry.
Duty Counsel suggested that a Social Inquiry Report with a psychological assessment. The Magistrate concurred.
