Seven Students Receive Dr. Ball Scholarships

The Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment Jeanne Atherden congratulated the recipients of this year’s Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarships.

Minister Atherden said, “I wish all our scholarship winners success as they prepare for their future careers in healthcare. These seven where chosen because they stood out to the selection committee as applicants who, upon competition of their studies, had the potential to render a great service to the island’s healthcare system. I would hope that all who applied for the scholarship will also complete their studies and return to have a career in our healthcare system.”

This year’s recipients were:

  1. Deidra Ferguson who will study Nursing at Southern Adventist University;
  2. Dwaynisha Pearman who will study Nursing at New England Institute of Technology;
  3. Chioma Nwasike who will study Medicine at Dalhousie University;
  4. Victoria Trott who will study Nursing at Bermuda College;
  5. Gerteikquia Hatherley who will study Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville;
  6. Riann Ming who will study Medicine at Howard University College of Medicine;
  7. Che-Lei Trott who will study Forensic Pathology at Southern Adventist University.

Since the scholarship was founded the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment has financially assisted dozens of Bermudians who are beginning careers or pursuing professional development in public health.

Scholarships may be offered for study in a range of healthcare fields, such as nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, maternal care, dental hygiene, dentistry, psychiatry, drug counseling, social work, occupational safety and health, environmental health, medical studies or other public health fields which are relevant to Bermuda.
