Prisoner Charged With Possession Of Cannabis
Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug 10], a 25-year-old prisoner faced charges of possessing cannabis inside of Westgate.
Devon Hewey received a sentence of additional prison time after pleading guilty to possessing cannabis in Westgate Correctional Facility, which is an Increased Penalty Zone.
The Prosecutor told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that in November 2014, Corrections Officers had discovered the substance in a ‘twist’ in an air vent in a cell occupied by Hewey. Hewey told the Magistrate that he had no knowledge of it and claimed it must have been left there by the cell’s previous occupant.
Asked by the Magistrate, Hewey said that he was serving 40 years before parole.
The Magistrate sentenced Hewey to 30 days in prison for the primary offence, and then a further twelve months in prison because the offence was committed in an Increased Penalty Zone.
