Photo Set #3: 2015 Non Mariners Race
Droves of people made their way by both land and sea to Sandys Boat Club on Sunday afternoon [Aug 2] to take part in the last big event for the holiday weekend — the annual Non-Mariners Race.
The race, or more correctly the “non-race” sees objects fashioned into watercraft take to the water with hopes of staying afloat long enough to be seen off the club dock. The “non-boats” often have a theme based on news events, and this year was no different.
.
The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition.
