Photos & Video Set #2: Non Mariners Race

August 3, 2015

The holiday weekend came to a close with the Non-Mariners Race taking place on Sunday afternoon [Aug 2] at the Sandys Boat Club, with large crowds in attendance on both land and sea.

The annual “non-event” kicks off with the “non-colors raising,” which is followed by “non-penguins fly past,” which is followed by the march on by the “non-calypso pipe band,” which sees the band members dressed in rather unusual attire.

.

The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition. Amazing that with all the bribery etc against the OBA, the um um directors saw it not to make floats of fun about them? Bermudians with a social conscious should boycott this one sided affair.

Those of us with a social conscious don’t attend, but I’m trying to hold on to my RACE card.

    • PBanks says:

Are the original Not the Um Um folks even part of this event anymore? And even so, anybody can make a float lampooning anything on the island, regardless of affiliation… it shouldn’t be up to a particular group to come up with something witty with bite, right?

      • LMAO says:

Lame excuse – they are the ones that drove the non mariners and the satire of the political chat of the day. Lets see the photos and then speak pbanks

Someone needs to gather up the photos from the last 5 years and my point will be clear.
