Man Detained After Barricading Himself In House
[Updated] Emergency personnel responded to a residence in Smiths this afternoon [Sept 4], as a 69-year-old man barricaded himself in the house, and the police said “it is believed that the man may be in possession of a bladed article.”
A police spokesperson said, “At 1:22pm first responders attended a report of a 69 year old man who has barricaded himself in a residence on Cotswold Lane in Smiths and it is believed that the man may be in possession of a bladed article.
“As a result, the house has been surrounded by officers and a police negotiator has been dispatched to the scene. Police are asking for the patience of the area residents as this is an active police scene.”
Update 8.28pm: The police said the house was “forcefully entered” and the 69-year-old man was detained without incident, and transported to MAWI for assessment.
A police spokesperson said, “At 1:22pm first responders attended a report of a 69 year old man who has barricaded himself in a residence on Cotswold Lane in Smiths and it is believed that the man may be in possession of a bladed article.
“As a result, the house has been surrounded by officers and a police negotiator has been dispatched to the scene and at a few minutes after 7pm the house was forcefully entered, and the 69 year old man was detained without incident.
“He was then transported to Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute under the Mental Health Act for assessment.”
