Premier & ACBDA Visit Whitney Middle School
Earlier today [Sept 28] Premier Michael Dunkley joined team representatives from the America’s Cup Bermuda [ACBDA] and the America’s Cup Event Authority [ACEA] for a presentation to students at the Whitney Institute Middle School.
Premier Dunkley joined two time America’s Cup Winning skipper for Oracle Team USA, James Spithill in a special assembly and talked about the upcoming America’s Cup events, what it is like to sail for Oracle Team USA and how to become a sailor.
Jennifer Pitcher of the America’s Cup Event Authority spent time explaining the exciting Endeavour Program to the students of Whitney. The Americas Cup has secured funding until 2017, four different types of training sailing boats and all children aged 9-12 years old will have the opportunity to participate. The East Fort, will, in conjunction with the Bermuda Sea Cadets, open shortly at TS Admiral Somers in St. Georges and a facility in the West End will follow in early 2016.
The America’s Cup has teamed up with some of the biggest names in the marine industry to launch this ambitious Community Sailing Project.
An educational initiative: the America’s Cup Endeavour Program will enable students across Bermuda to learn more about sailing through a cross-curricular STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math] Education Program.
It will also provide a legacy pathway for Bermuda’s youth to learn sophisticated sailing skills, build self-confidence and increase understanding of water safety and sailing and provide knowledge of our significant maritime heritage.
The industry partnerships provide and maintain equipment and the goal is to reach kids from all areas of Bermuda and give them the opportunity to try sailing and develop an appreciation of the marine environment.
In collaboration with the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and North Sails a training/internship program has also been set up where the top College Sailors in the United States will be brought in for an internship session each year to train with and learn from Oracle Team USA.
Photo opportunity number 1,000,000…shame on this guy
So he shouldn’t have gone or shouldn’t have allowed photos?
Thank you Premier Dunkley for taking the time out to EDUCATE some of our youngster as to what goes on in the rest of the whole world, and I am not talking about just the sailboats.
