‘Eco-Friendly Initiatives’ For America’s Cup Event
The America’s Cup said they are “promoting and implementing eco-friendly initiatives in Bermuda for this weekend’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event.”
“Green Guidelines, a first for Bermuda on such a large scale, will be in effect in the Event Village from October 16 to 18 and is mandatory for all exhibitors and vendors,” the organisers said.
“Guidelines for exhibitors and vendors include the following:
- Single-use plastic beverage bottles and cups are prohibited; instead you must use refillable and/or reusable cups and bottles.
- Use environmentally friendly packaging ie biodegradable cups, bamboo cutlery, reusable cloth bags, etc.
- No plastic straws, lids or beverage stir sticks, plastic cutlery, Styrofoam, plastic takeout containers or plastic bags.
- No balloons.
“Butterfield & Vallis has provided compostable versions of food and beverage containers and utensils at discounted rates so that vendors and exhibitors are able to comply with the guidelines.
“Spectators who plan to attend the Event Village are asked not to litter and to dispose of waste at sign posted waste stations comprised of a 3 bin system: regular waste, recycling or compostables, bring reusable water bottles, interact with green volunteer teams to learn how to be greener and carpool, walk or use public transport to attend the event.
I”n addition, there will be hydration stations located throughout the Event Village for attendees to refill their bottles.
“The America’s Cup is also encouraging boaters as well as land-based spectators to join the company in ensuring a green event.”
“Along with the Green Guidelines, the America’s Cup is also promoting on the water sustainability. Boaters are encouraged to do the following:
- Pick up any plastic they see floating in the ocean and dispose of it on land.
- Be environmentally conscious about how much you use your engine
- When fueling up, be conscious of any residual fuel spilling in the water
- Recycle cans and bottles and don’t throw them in the water.
- Be careful where you anchor.

“When an organization as big as America’s Cup comes to Bermuda and aims to reduce its carbon footprint, it’s a great thing for the Island,” says Vanese Flood Gordon, Education and Enforcement Officer, Waste Management.
“We were pleased to be a part of the consultation process and we encourage residents to follow the guidelines on land and on water.”

So , as flu season rapidly approaches , not to mention all other manner of communicable diseases , please dear public , if you’re drinking directly out of your re-useable water bottle and go to refill it please keep the spout/top of your bottle well away from and clear of the fill’s tap/spigot .
We who are trying out best to avoid preventable sickness do not take it lightly when thoughtless people insist on putting their slobber encrusted water bottles up against what should be a sterile surface .
Laugh ? It’s a horrifyingly common scene .

I’d like to think that the AC can serve as a ‘green catalyst’ where the above become the Bermuda standard.
Perhaps though we can start with this, then see if Harbour Nights can continue it, then build from there?
This is very good news for Bermuda and credit to all the environmental groups like KBB, BEST, Living Reefs, Greenrock, Waste Management, Chewstick and others – the talented Anne Hyde in particular – who are all stepping up behind the scenes to assist Americas Cup in managing this important aspect. It take a collaborative effort to identify a process to host large scale green events in Bermuda and credit to the Green Collaborative initially focused on measuring and managing the waste at BeachFest 2014.

There was litter everywhere. I could not find a trash can anywhere inside the concert zone. One food vendor with a trash bag attached to a pole.
And by the way, those bean bag chairs on the ground were a danger. We saw several bad falls as people tried to move through the crowd and tripped over them
