New Fire System To Protect Bermuda Archives

October 13, 2015

A Bermuda company is helping to protect the Island’s historic records by installing a revolutionary hybrid fire suppression system.

Air Care, based in Mill Creek, and strategic partner, Canadian firm Troy Life & Fire Safety which has a long standing history with Victaulic, are in the process of installing a fire protection system that uses nitrogen to inert the oxygen in a room so fire cannot survive.

It means that delicate documents and books will not sustain any damage that would normally happen if systems such as sprinklers were used.

Craig Stevenson, Manager of Business Development & Sales of Air Care, said: “The Bermuda Archives are extremely important and their protection for future generations is paramount. We are delighted that we can help preserve some of Bermuda’s history.”

Although the system has been in use extensively around the world, this will be the first integrated solution in Bermuda, designed specifically to address the requirements of the Bermuda Archives.

Ian MacInnis, Victaulic’s Vortex Sales Manager, said the applications for the system were huge – ranging from art galleries to data centres.

“There are a wide range of businesses and organisations using this system ranging from Ford, Verizon and Boeing to NASA,” he said.

It is expected that the system’s installation will be complete by early 2016 and provide a safe and long term fire protection solution to the island’s heritage and history.

Myron K. Burchall, Assistant Buildings Manager, said: “Having technology like this in a department as sensitive as the Archives does give peace of mind and we know that it has a new level of protection.”
