Bermuda On NatGeo’s Best Of The World List
[Updated] Bermuda has been included in National Geographic Traveler magazine’s annual Best of the World list, which highlights 20 “must-see places” to visit around the world.
In recognizing Bermuda, the National Geographic article said: “Scratch the immaculately gardened surface of this British overseas territory, and you’ll find a place brimming with personality.
“Every year, participants in the Non-Mariners’ Race vie to construct the shoddiest vessels to see who sinks fastest; descendants of Native Americans proudly hold Pow Wows; and policemen and businessmen insist on wearing knee-high socks with their shorts, no matter what the rest of the world may think.
The Best of the World 2016 appears in the December/January issue of National Geographic Traveler, which will be on newsstands in December. The full list is online now at natgeotravel.com/best-trips-2016.
Update 1.54pm: BTA CEO Bill Hanbury said, “This year the world’s travel media have fallen head over heels in love with Bermuda. Outside Magazine named Bermuda Best Island, Conde Nast Traveler put us on its top five islands list and now we’re in National Geographic Traveler’s top 20 destinations worldwide.
“Our marketing team is telling authentic stories about Bermuda that are resonating with travelers, while at the same time, our partners across the tourism economy are delivering memorable experiences.
“The accolades we’ve earned in 2015 are highly valuable for growing the tourism industry going forward and everyone in Bermuda should feel proud of these endorsements,” Mr Hanbury added.
In a congratulations letter to the BTA, the editors of the magazine said winning placement on the list was a “competitive process.”
“The ‘Best of the World’ list reflects the travel expertise and global knowledge of National Geographic,” said Amy Alipio, the magazine’s features editor. “The destinations represent what’s superlative, timely and richly authentic in the world of travel today.”
National Geographic Traveler readers are known as a passionate bunch that yearn to explore because of their love of travel, high passport ownership and a track record of spending on outdoor recreation activity.
At 2pm today, the BTA will participate in the magazine’s live twitter chat where destinations on the list have an opportunity to engage with readers. Local tourism industry partners are welcome to join the conversation using #NatGeoTravelChat.
The BTA added that the magazine has the largest audience of any travel magazine, with more than 8.5 million readers.
BTA doing nothing right?
Jealousy and envy will get them who oppose the One Bermuda Alliance / BTA shhhh, (watch your mouth )
So this is the first time National Geographic has heard of Bermuda?
Hmmmmm, similar awards and nominations under another administration were viewed as insignificant or purchased recognition by those who were opposed to that party. Interesting to see how the some of those same people now love this but hated the other.
Just an observation.
But cudo’s to us for making it in yet another magazine!!!
Please provide those links so we can all see those links, awards and accolades. Gee thanks!
Out of interest can you post some links to those?
You are confusing this with awards like the Global Leadership Award granted to Paula Cox, or her Woman of the Year Award or her Emerald Award of Excellence.
This is National Geographic and it is being awarded to Bermuda, not a politician.
Your thought process is seriously warped Raymond Ray.. Our Island is voted best of the World in an acclaimed intl. magazine and PLP supporters are Jealous? I support the PLP and I am over the moon about this recognition, as are many others.. If I question the BTA/OBA does this means something is wrong with me? You need to sort your life out bredren because you are seriously beginning to annoy me… Not everyone thinks like you pal, some of us hold account where account should be held…unlike you who are just happy you have your old UBP back and could care less about anything else.
Wonder how much it cost to place us on this list?
What an ignorant statement!
Was this an ignorant statement when the OBA supporters said the exact same thing back when Bermuda was voted best Island and there was a different Govt? I’m just asking.. This foolishness needs to stop all together.
@ I heart 441, No ignorant person… National Geographic takes kickbacks now from the OBA/BTA???? Go lay down…
SMDH
Show us proof of your accusation!
Not as much as the $800 million unaccounted for by some PLP members.
SpongeBob spent $800 million in less then 2 years.
He spent it on the wages of your cousins , brothers and sisters.
Now had he done what needed to be done and fired 3000 of them what would you be saying instead ?
How much would you take to be bribed? One suspects that a publication as prestigious as National Geographic would think that question equally as offensive as the one I just asked you!
Sadly, unless someone in Government steps up to the plate, those same immaculate gardens will soon have a maintenance yard right in the middle.
In an era which technology rules, it’s great to see us being listed on a magazine that has many subscribers, I’m one myself and I’m in my 30′s. With this recognition, our tourism brand will be recognized as an adventures location. To all perspective entrepreneurs out there, now is the time to become creative to entice adventure travelers to experience our Jewel in the Atlantic!
You don’t pay for this…you earn it by convincing editors and writers that you’re the best in the world. Surprise, Bermuda doing something right. I’m sure it really bothers the haters that and BTA and their CEO got this designation. Can’t wait to see the comments from the usual line-up.
So National Geographic takes kickback to be in their articles?
I’m glad I can tick Bermuda off my top 20 list… already here, been here, done this, bored now…
Now sit back and realize how very fortunate you are!
Now for the ‘real’ story, how did this come about? Did the BTA sactually secure this award? If they did, then this would be a first as they have not done much else. Do not shoot the messenger, the BTA track record is abysmal in securing visitors and they need more money, for what?
I would love to see Bermuda’s tourism prosper as it did in the late 1980′s but it would appear to date, this is not the team to do it. What about timelines, accountability and results? Bermuda can no longer afford to continue to throw money at this Authority with such poor results. Incidentally, the increase in visitor numbers in the laste 1980′s was a attributable to Terrorism in Europe. Sad but true.
So at the end of the year, when the arrival numbers are up year over year will that help change your biased viewpoint? Or will you still think the same way? Tell me you would prefer going back to the old Tourism Department. Well done BTA you deserve it.
We da bomb, go us!!
Here’s a photo of Bermuda that Commander Scott Kelly tweeted from the International Space Station yesterday: https://mobile.twitter.com/StationCDRKelly/status/667434768741638145
