‘Stuff The Bus’ Campaign To Begin This Evening
Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell launched the island’s ‘Stuff the Bus’ event today [Nov 30] at the Bermuda Institute in Southampton, with Principal Dr. Lois Tucker and 12th grade student Zakiyyah Showers welcoming the Minister’s announcement.
For the campaign, a bus will be parked at three different locations around the island beginning this evening, and running through Wednesday, December 2 from 6.00pm to 8.00pm, inviting the community to purchase non-perishable goods and toys to “stuff the bus” as donations.
These items will be distributed to selected charities between December 6 and December 9.
Minister Crockwell said, “It is a pleasure for me to be back for the second year of “Stuff the Bus” which is an important charitable initiative created by the students and faculty of the Bermuda Institute School of which I am proud to be an alumni.”
“This community service project is made possible by the generosity of Bermuda’s bus operators, the Department of Public Transportation, the community at large and the Bermuda Institute Student Association.
“After many years of prosperity, many Bermudians have been faced with a declining standard of living which in many cases is no fault of their own. As we work towards bringing all Bermudians back into the full participation of our economy, it is incumbent upon us to share what we can to ensure our neighbours can provide for their families.”
“This unique, civic-minded project is a true example of charitable giving – an effort to make a difference for those less fortunate during the Christmas holidays.”
Student Zakiyyah Showers said, “Thank you Honorable Crockwell for supporting this initiative again and taking the time out of your busy schedule to join us to launch it.”
“Thank you to the Department of Public Transportation for providing the bus. Thank you to the bus operators for your volunteer spirit. Thank you Bermuda for the support us gave us last year. Please donate non-perishable goods and new toys.
“We pray that once again you will join us to help the charities that will benefit from this event. They are Salvation Army, Sunshine League Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Lions Club.”
“The locations are as follows. Tonight we will be at Arnolds in Somerset from 6pm-8om. Tomorrow night, Tuesday we will be at Hamilton Market Place from 6pm-8pm. Wednesday night we will be at Warwick Lindos from 6pm-8pm then at Heron Bay Market place from 8pm-10pm.
“Thank you again for your support.”
The Minister’s full statement follows below:
Good afternoon everyone and thank you for coming.
It is a pleasure for me to be back for the second year of “Stuff the Bus” which is an important charitable initiative created by the students and faculty of the Bermuda Institute School of which I am proud to be an alumni.
This community service project is made possible by the generosity of Bermuda’s bus operators, the Department of Public Transportation, the community at large and the Bermuda Institute Student Association.
After many years of prosperity, many Bermudians have been faced with a declining standard of living which in many cases is no fault of their own. As we work towards bringing all Bermudians back into the full participation of our economy, it is incumbent upon us to share what we can to ensure our neighbours can provide for their families.
This unique, civic-minded project is a true example of charitable giving – an effort to make a difference for those less fortunate during the Christmas holidays.
If you are not familiar with “Stuff the Bus” let me tell you how this works. A bus will be parked at three different locations this evening November 30, tomorrow December 1, and Wednesday December 2 from 6pm to 8pm inviting the community to purchase non-perishable goods and toys to “stuff the bus”.
These items will be distributed to selected charities between December 6th and December 9th.
To the PTB team and operators, the students, faculty, parents and friends who are all participating, I just need to say this is a fabulous programme of community sharing – extending a helping hand during the holiday season by providing much needed non-perishable goods.
The Department of Public Transportation has very generously donated the use of the buses to collect the donations from various locations around the island and we are most grateful for those bus operators who have agreed to donate their time to drive the buses on the nights of operation. Bermuda Institute students will be on hand to sing carols and interact with those who donate at the collection locations.
I commend all of you who are lending a hand in this endeavour. We are all aware that too many Bermudian families are facing difficult times this holiday season. Many are truly struggling and are very appreciative of assistance in any form. This project is a great opportunity for Bermuda residents to get involved in making a difference.
It will assist families who are in need and I encourage everyone to please contribute what you can to this initiative.
I again want to thank the Bermuda Institute Student Association, the school faculty and staff together with the Department of Public Transportation, for joining forces to ‘Stuff the Bus’ and to make a difference in our community leading up to the holidays.
Thank you.
Bless up.
why not shelly bay market place for the east end people?
Wow…why not take ya lazy a** a couple miles further if you were SO concerned…the type of person to get something free and then complain about it…smh
Well done! What a wonderful initiative.
Congratulations to the OBA for this program and to the people of Bermuda who so generously donate in an effort to create a Merry Christmas for all !
I’m sorry …. Let me remind you and others who may be ignorant to the fact that this program was started by a bus operator while the PLP was government .
Thank God for Public School and B.I. Children that catch the bus.
I dove through 4 flaming hoops, 1ft apart, a total of about 8ft while the plp were in government. Congratulations plp…wait, no. You can’t attribute the actions of a single person to a political party. How juvenile can you be?
@coffee,,,your brainwashed! Does it matter who ,why or when ,when it comes to giving?
Wrong again … If you are to chastise , make sure to target the original person who thrust politicking to the fore ! Now why would someone congratulate the OBA for this great initiative that was started by a unuionised bus operator at least seven years ago ?
This wonderful man also collected previously loved toys as well as food for the needy …. Want to know how I know ? Bernews archives … Now do your own research .
it doesn’t matter who started it, it is a great venture so just stop babbling and go and donate something.
At the risk of sounding pedantic, Minister Crockwell, you are an alumnus, not alumni, of the Bermuda Institute. Nice bow tie though!
Crock is back to wearing his bow ties, BIG.
What happen to the eastern end of the island??? #leftoutagain
Congratulations to all involved – what a great way to make it easy for our community to donate and involve our young leaders.
I will be at Lindos with my Toys and Goods.
I hope they chose a bus with no roaches in it
