David-Bowie_Chicago_Singer David Bowie — a former Bermuda resident — has died of cancer at the age of 69, prompting tributes from his fellow artists around the world.

A statement was issued on his social media accounts, saying he “died peacefully, surrounded by his family” after an “18-month battle with cancer”.

Mr. Bowie and super model wife Iman lived at a waterfront Sandys Parish home for close to a decade beginning in the late 1990s.

The superstar couple maintained a low-profile on the island during the time Bermuda was their primary residence, but they made occasional public appearances.

Mr. Bowie attended the awards presentation at the second annual Bermuda International Film Festival in 1998.

And one year he and Iman were in the audience at a Bermuda High SchoolChristmas concert which the daughter of a local employee was performing in. Mr. Bowie completed most of the songs on 1999′s “Hours…” — his 21st studio album — in Bermuda.

The artist’s hits include Let’s Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel Rebel and Life on Mars. He was also well known for creating his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

His obituary on the BBC’s website says, “David Bowie was one of the most influential musicians of his time, constantly re-inventing his persona and sound, from the 1960s hippy of Space Oddity, through Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke to his later incarnation as a soulful rocker.

“Where before, artists and groups either evolved their musical style and appearance or remained unchanging, David Bowie seemed to be in permanent revolution.

“He defied any label. Music, fashion, sexuality: all were Bowie’s playthings. He was truly an artistic chameleon.”
