80 Minute Video: Airport Redevelopment Meeting

February 3, 2016

A public meeting on the “social and environmental issues” surrounding the airport redevelopment project was held last night [Feb 2] at Clearwater Middle School in St David’s.

The event announcement said, “Aecon Group Inc., a prospective partner of the Government of Bermuda in the redevelopment of the L.F. Wade International Airport, has retained LAS Int’l Consulting [LAS] and Bermuda Environmental Consulting [BEC] to undertake a Scoping Study as part of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment [ESIA] process for the Redevelopment of the L.F. Wade International Airport. LAS and BEC invite the public to a consultation to seek feedback on the social and environmental issues that need to be considered in the ESIA.

Graeme Smith, Technical Manager of LAS International Consulting, says: “Public engagement is an essential part of the Scoping Study. We encourage anyone who wishes to provide feedback on the airport redevelopment project to attend one of these meetings.

“This could be from a building, environmental, social or economic perspective. We will use this information to identify and assess the environmental and social impacts and benefits of the proposed redevelopment to enable a balanced decision-making process.”

The next consultation event will take place at 6.30pm this evening [Feb 3] at Pennos Wharf, with the third meeting scheduled for 5.30pm on February 4th at the Anglican Cathedral Hall in Hamilton.

This is the first Im hearing of any meeting in St David’s about the airport construction. Was this advertised to the public? These lot are up to their tricks again. They will get their airport & again like every other big project in Bermy the people of Bermuda will get shafted. #facedownbuttup

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Sure was put out there about the meetings. You have to keep up. No excuse with media like Bernews around.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Heard about it I the media last week, as well as tomorrow nights and Friday’s, been online, on the radio. Don’t get derogatory about others if it is you that isn’t keeping up.

    • Bye darn de rerd says:

Not as long as the government doesn’t change it won’t!

  2. SMH says:

Kim Swan ranting about no politicians being at an EIS consultation meeting, shows me that he is not very astute.
He is now trying to get air time as he needs to stay relevant in case the PLP ever comes back to power (God Help us) and he does not want to miss the gravy train.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

It is a poor indication of the opposition if two of its prominent members go to a meeting that was widely advertised as being a consultation meeting for a private contract, and complain that there are no politicians to answer their questions. It was known and made clear that this was a meeting by the companies contracted so complete a social and economic study, so for two prominent members of the opposition to go there and politicize it; either they knew what the meeting was about and did so deliberately, which makes them misleading, completely disrespectful and unfit for positions of trust in political leadership; or they didn’t have a clue, which means they didn’t understand the clear advertisement of what the meetings were for, thus unfit for positions of political leadership… and not understanding what was clearly advertisemented is even more disturbing considering one of the is supposed to be a teacher. And to further get up there are pander the gross misrepresentation of this notion that we are giving away $1b, a distortion to the point now that it has lost any ability to lay claim to any hold on truth, especially in the face of common sense and basic financial mathematics.
On behalf of all Bermudians who have taken the time to fully read everything that has been made available in order to better understand what is being done, I appologize to the organizers, and thank them for their efforts.

  3. project says:

Advertised on the very same website as you are blogging on right now

  4. Really? says:

Wow.. HUGE turn out. They had to have advertised, otherwise how would the 18 pp who attended known about it. LOL

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Subtract the professional meeting goers & the press. What is left?

      • Kangoocar says:

@triangle, I can only assume the 75% of Bermudians that the plp claim are against this airport deal, didn’t think it was important enough to show up??? What an f’n joke???? Hahahaha, the usual 3 or 4 plp hacks were there, but other that no one showed up??? The plp really need to know when it is their time to just sh.t up, and stay out of the way of progress!

        • Brian says:

I’m not for Plp and am completely against the way this is happening, as should every Bermudian.

  5. San George says:

Taxation without representation. Democracy and capitalism cannot long exist without efforts to have equality and justice under law.
    Quo Fata Ferunt

  6. Head Case says:

From another source this was an explosive meeting NOT, no one there ( count them ) and that includes lost in the weeds Swan, who was crying in thee wind as usual. One of Bermudas worst political wannabes. BUILKD IT NOW NOW NOW

  7. ImJustSayin says:

Democracy and taxation there lays the problem.

  8. Up D hill says:

Build the Airport and get Bermudians working ! Stop giving empty barrels a stage to spew their trash because that is all they have,,,,, TRASH!

  9. Coffee says:

I actually walked out of the farce .

    • Butthol says:

i wouldn’t waste my time going to hear a bunch of babies crying just to be heard and be NEGATIVE, can’t wait for best to start their crap. So many I should say FEW Bermudians crying down anything that is needed just to hear themselves bleet like lost sheep

  10. JUNK YARD DOG says:

Who knows what tourism travel will be like in 10;20 or even 30 from years from now.
If i were a visiting tourist say in 15 years, all i would have is a picture swipe card, get on and off the plane the plane with the aid of an escalator and into a taxi or customized hotel transportation and off i go to the beach.
Who needs an Airport cattle / sheep pen?
Who needs our children with debt responsibility ?
Who needs to wait in line for the slaughter ?

hey ! Bermuda is another world or is it ?

    AND

Who need an airport that cost an arm and two legs who make investors wealthy. measure twice cut once, be very careful how you/ our spent your hard earned money.

Look to the future of International travel if you could only have the vision.
The money would be better spent on building a Bermuda hotel here and V bies can build it,something that does not look like a prison, with a number on the door, or a New York high rise , something that will attract all if “Sandals” patrons and more.

Every one ,It is time Bermuda started thinking out of the box the time is now.

Architects, if you must build ,a reminder here , always build on the high ground not on fill.
