Honk If This Morning’s Ignorance Got You Vexed
“Honk if this morning’s ignorance got you vexed,” is the latest sign to grace East Broadway, with the sign visible on the road this evening, following after this morning’s protest which saw at least one protester holding a sign saying “honk if you support us.”
The sign on East Broadway follows after the protest this morning which saw people descend on the East Broadway area holding signs about the proposed immigration reform, and holding a protest that lasted to just past 9.00am, with some of the protesters standing in the road for a portion of the event, which caused traffic delays for commuters heading to town from the west end.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva said that some of the “behaviors demonstrated” this morning “may constitute the offenses of unlawful assembly or obstruction” and “we are preparing a file for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions to decide whether any charges should be laid.”
Since the immigration initiative was announced, there have been four protests, and you can view all our coverage of those protests here.
Honk honk honk honk Honk honk honk honk Honk honk honk honk
Ha! Spot on. Spectacular own goal. Issues are important, but not as important as your boss moaning because you are an hour late.
Looking at all the dislikes in this thread Alaska Hall’s robot must have been in overdrive mode.
I might start myself just to piss them off…oh wait, I have s*!t to do.
Yesterdays demonstration was utterly unnecessary and uncalled for…they definitely donnot have my support….HONK!
Honky Tonk Time, Yeeeee Haaaaawwwwww.
LMFAO
It was ignorant. If it happens again the police need to do their job. Lock these inbreds up! Plptards were breaking the law!
Inbreds?? It has to be a nicer and more respectful way to address people. We are truly a nation divided it’s extremely sad.
Wow, a comment referring to people as inbreds, regardless of whether you support their position, garnered over 200 likes? The internet truly does empower those without the guts to dare say anything like that in the open.
Clearly you are not for all of us obeying all laws. The person or persons who erected this sign appear to be breaking two laws. Littering and Advertisements.
Inbreds? That’s more your peoples sort of thing. Get it right.
This is where Diplomacy around a table would make more sense.
Are we not a reasonable people.
What is gained by name calling ? ZIP IT !
They were doing worst 60 years ago, so we can say they are more civil with their abuse.
LMFAO
Worse* and I’m 28 so no, I wasn’t, never have.
Honk.
Such a blatant demonstration of selfishness to stand in the road and do that!!! And to see the police standing there doing nothing was unbelievable.
We have descended into anarchy plain and simple.
Waaaay too much credit.
Honk if you hate Onions but crave Bermuda status.
Honky Tonk.
LMFAO
Beeplp Beeplp
Absolute ignorance AND entirely counterproductive. Yeah, interfering with people trying to get to work or dropping their kids off at school is a great way to win hearts and minds. *slow handclap*
Bit of a change of tune from the police who stood by and allowed it to go on while traffic backed up to somerset. where was desilva then…probably stuck in traffic??
As a country we rely on police to deal with situations like this. a simple, would you mind terribly standing in roundabout or on pavement so the whole country is not late for work and school would have solved it.
Haha brilliant. We do need some political humour in this stuck up and reactive island.
Honk Honk Honk Honk.
Wondering what they’ll come up with nectnext. Stand on the run way stopping planes……
This protest is ever going to stop; this government refuses to listen so the protests will get LOUDER AND LOUDER.
HONK HONK HONK ah
These are the most telling words Alvin has ever uttered….
“The protests will never stop”
That being the case, carry on OBA.
You are more concerned with the government than the issue aren’t you. You are a loud, party serving bigot and the rest of us are tired of your crap.
MORON MORON MORON – is that loud enough?
Alvin, you act like everyone is severely oppressed under an OBA Govt and that one day the masses will rise up and be free from the shackles of the oppressor like it’s some epic movie.
Where the heck were you when your party the PLP was drunk on power and spending all that money that the OBA wished it had now to run an effective economy? Hmm…where were you? Hoping everything would work out eventually under the PLP? Give it a break.
Wow, a lot of angry, insecure guys on this talkback rallying against the very people who have been treated like dirt for decades.
Further evidence the internet isn’t a tool for the “silent majority,” but for bullies.
Alvin, take your Chipmunks, and honk off.
Dear Alvin,
It’s called democracy. When the majority vote for something it means the majority want that to happen. If you voted for the opposition you are in the minority and are supposed to respect the majority. A large % of the population did that.
Sit down. Shut up and vote in the next election.
Democracy.
The people. Of. Bermuda. Are seeing. That. The. Oba. Is. The. Same. Old ubp
It is nothing like the UBP…you may try to pretend it is to, but the whole set up and access to run is a completely different model. It is inclusive of all, not exclusive like the old UBP and the PLP.
O.B.A. are U.B.P. on steriods.
LMFAO
Same old UBP?? The UBP left this island w no debt, a heathy bank account , a booming economy and no unemployment (for those willing to work).,. So, your point is?
Followers were told to “go and fornicate in the bushes”! This is the result!
The Government is listening. They are listening to the majority who know this is a good thing for Bermuda. Without people this island would not survive. More business will close, meaning more people out of work. Taxes will go up. More people will loose their homes, because they can’t pay the mortgage. Everything has a knock on effect.
Not sure if you know this. Most Bermudians work for foreign business. Hotels, most Restaurant, International Companies
You “protestors for hire” need to take your blinders off…
HONK! HONK! HONK!
bring it on
And we wonder why guest workers get the jobs!! Showing the million dollar investors that are looking to come to Bermuda how ignorant we can be!! Absolute foolishness this morning! Unfortunately we are not helping the issue when we do things like this, we are making a strong case for immigration reform!
You must. Not. Know. Our. Bermuda. History. Every. Thing we. Have today. We. Got by. Dementrations. Like. You saw. This. Morning. And. There. Will. Be. More. And. More until justice. For the people. Comes
Funniest post ever.
Classic.
Frank, I see punctuation and spelling are not your strong points!
747…look up.
Why. Can’t. You. Write. Properly?
Another 747.
Most people are not with you Frank. And thank God for that.
This might be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read! Whole family is Bermudian (and one of the oldest Bermudian families on the island) and they 100% do not agree with this statement. Good luck though in ruining Bermuda’s future!
12 stupid protesters led by a status Bermudian. It don’t get no better than that!
And what would have happened if an ambulance, for example had needed to get to the hospital?
that would require common sense to consider, none of that was present.
Easy, 20-30 people could have had a life on their hands, but I’m sure they didn’t think that far ahead. Well no, they clearly didn’t.
I guess by the dislikes #nolivesmatyer
How can 79 people dislike this comment? Its true? I’m hoping they mean don’t like the possibility that it could have happened I hope! Otherwise, you people are cruel!
It wasn’t 79 people.
Whoever you are…..Thank you for the sign which I saw as I was heading home this evening. This morning was a horrible exercise in stress and very bad driving as I saw people trying to get out of the jam and head back west, presumably looking for another route.
We all accept your right to protest but you do not represent me and I have a right to get to work on time.
Thank you.
OBA sign yup!…can tell by da quality of work…will it be there tomorrow too.? Or will someone burn it tonight…lmfao.
As in good quality of work? Thats I what I vote for! What about you?
You catch on quick, unlike the others…hahaha!
You all are worrying about a protest that’s so petty…. What if they riot like in foreign countries????
Let the people express their self
express yourself on the sidewalk!
Thanks for the sign and my worst thoughts are saved for the idiots who inconvenienced the rest of us today, hope these clowns make time tomorrow if indeed they have jobs
These ignorant people are lucky that I wasn’t driving into town this morning as I am angry at what the PLP did to this Island of ours with their ignorant ideas of limiting work permits. Because of them, I no longer have a good paying job in an exempt company and are barely getting by.
Your exempt company cut a trail because it was economically feasible. More to come. #Technologicalunemployment
You’ll find that global regulations have increased in the financial sector, there is an increased demand for people. Technology has reduced people need to some extent, but we have reached a plateau in the last 10 years. Now there is a need for more people.
It’s called a GLOBAL financial crisis!! And the “profit over people” policies utilized by your former employer… call a spade a spade!
Bloody Republicans! ACT, THINK, and DO just like them! SMH!!
If the Police can’t deal with this then I would say even after their cut in pay they are still overpaid !
Course the thing is… if they were arested they would be be made as hero’s to the cause. ..
Anyone who has done ANY research on the benefits to all of us re Pathways to Immagration gets it. For those of you that don’t get it, take the time to research furthur,…take the emotion out of it and use your brain. It is not that hard to grasp if you can look at how this benefits ALL of us. If you still don’t get it, i know of 16 people on east Broadway this morning that would love your phone #.
Who was the American on TV ranting and raving?
The protesters obviously do not have jobs.
And the police failed to carry out their job.
Why can’t I wrap my head around the fact that a loud and vocal 0 to 2% of our population think they have the right to disrupt 98% of us? Is it because they actually think the louder you shout and rant you will get your way? Amazing yet again!
Best comment yet!
High concentration of idiots on this rock. The same person you’re against giving prc or status may be the same person hiring you or a family member.
That’s the point, IDIOT!!!!There are qualified Bermudians that are being overlooked for top positions. You know the positions that do the hiring. But you want to give PRC to someone who is less likely to hire me or my family member. What really makes me laugh… is that Corporate America has you so afraid they will pull out of the country. They are not concerned about work permits and PRCs the are looking at their bottomline and if it cost effective to stay here no matter how may work permits they are issued. Mean While the Bermudians with qualifications are leaving the island and finding jobs with these same companies elsewhere.
My husband is Bermudian and has a great job here. He went to university and has a Masters degree. What is your definition of qualified? Corporate America (being American I know) has standards and expectations. I’m pretty sure no one is scared of CA, but why ever but your job in jeopardy for a country that isn’t quite sure where it stands. I wouldn’t bank it on yet! Stop b!%@hing and better yourself!
What vexed me is that more Bermudians didn’t participate ! Maybe next time !!!
Right-minded (black and white) Bermudians like myself were too busy thinking about what i’m going to do if people like those protesters scare off more foreigners and investors. I’ll have to leave this beautiful island to find a job so that i can support my family.
What impressed me is that many more Bermudians clearly chose not to participate.
I hope DeSilva is also launching an investigation as to why the police didn’t act but just directed traffic? The his is setting a dangerous precedent for future disruptions if not nipped in the bud
By acting they would only have escalated the situation. I think if it happens again their hand will be forced, but think letting the protest fizzle this morning, which it did by 9am (when traffic was flowing in two lanes) was a smart move.
Honkin like a goose with a purpose…
“A country with an inverted population pyramid must significantly increase productivity and exports in order to cover the government’s debt obligations without a significant increase in the tax burden on workers. Failure to achieve productivity and export increases will result in either significant tax increases on the workforce or reduction of benefits to retirees.
Any pension obligations supported by investment in non-government obligations will require that these investments be liquidated to get cash to pay the pension obligations. This can be referred to as “dis-saving”. In a society with an inverted population pyramid the saving by the working age population is not enough to offset the dis-saving or liquidation of assets by the retiree population. This puts downward pressure on asset values.”
^This is why you need immigration; without it, the country implodes under the weight of the current debt. I can’t fault the OBA for the debt or the attempt at immigration reform.
Very proud of my fellow Bermudians about time we stand up for something.GOOD JOB
When-ever there was a major event that disrupted or destroyed lives in this country there was a Commission of Inquiry, and recommendations were made, i.e. the Belco riots, several disturbances in the 70,s including 1977, the general strike 1981 which saw thousands upon thousands workers march, the closure of many guest houses from 1990 onwards, the end of College Weeks, the closure of the Bases. A lot of good has been done for this Country, and we can,t get it right every time, but we can learn. We must as a people, and as leaders of this country look at where we are, and what is down the road. There is so little transparency and accountability by past and presen t Governments, in part, this has led to growing indifference, and by some a callous attitude. Its rather late in the day for the leaders to sit down and talk, but they must, they really must.
YUP GOOD JOB
HONK HONK
Wow. Who got paid to stay up all night clicking dislikes? Do you really think Bermudians are that dumb? Pathetic.
I noticed that as well!! A whole lot of dislikes. Must have been told in their meetings to troll the news websites and click the dislike button as many times as they can.
Yea it’s pretty damn obvious, about time they figured out how to do it I guess.
I blame MAWI. If they had recalled their out patients, no-one would have been protesting because they would have all been inside.
…typo, ‘Iggrance’, lol!
WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW, these comments make me angry as a young bermudian. These people are fighting for “SOMETHING” bigger than traffic delays and being 1 hour late. GET OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!
If we want change, then make a scene, get attention until something happens. SORRRRRY, not SORRRRRY!
**Don’t comment, I honestly don’t care!
What are they fighting for?
Don’t tell me jobs, because that has been debunked numerous times already.
These people that have been here for 15 years+ have not taken jobs from anybody.
Between 2008 and 2014 work permits fell by 3,300+ and over the same time Bermudian jobs fell by almost the exact same number.
In 2007/8, when we achieved our highest GDP and basically no unemployment there were thousands of more work permits issued by the PLP.
See the correlation?
So again what are they fighting for (other than the fact that they hate the color the skin, of some, who will be affected by this legislation)?
correction they have taken the potential of a job away as how is it that no Bermudian has been trained or coached to take the job? Where is the long term plan?
LOL
Yea “SOMETHING”, they just aren’t sure what it is yet. Suck it up princess.
That is how my toddler acts when he doesn’t get his way. He makes a scene so he gets attention.
Makes sense is this situation as well. (Hint: This was sarcasm)
Lord help us all….
Ok…..Look. I need a final list from every single one of the PLP supporters / OBA bashers listing what they are against and why. I also need a list of things they will do to make Bermuda better and why their ideas are better than those under the OBA. I have a strong feeling that most PLP supporters really couldn’t get this done. Do “they” truly understand how business/politics work??? It is a BIG world outside of tiny Bermuda and most couldn’t handle a multi million dollar business transaction. The population is shrinking folks!!! How many of the protestors run fortune 500/1000 companies or handle more than $500K in assets. I’m sooo confused! Yes, I’m all for standing up for what you feel is right but I haven’t seen not one person come up with a better solution than those announced under the OBA government.
Beware if you honk and its a group of you honking then the plural word for that group is…guess …..lol
1) The population is falling.
2) Those affected by this change in policy have financially contributed to the island for many years.
3) The jobs argument has been debunked many, many times.
4) The only way to replace expats in high earning jobs, is to educated yourself.
5) The above option is open to every child on the island by law.
6) If you decide not to take education seriously, don’t complain about the employment you find yourself in years later.
7) There is a very wonderful world out there and Bermuda is very small. Lots of graduates don’t want to return possibly because life is more fun elsewhere.
8) What if the OBA were to abandon the full status 20 year plan, and just create PRC’s after 20 years, thus raising PRC requirement by 5 years?
9) What if this plan was to be reviewed in 20 years time and if it has had a negative effect, abandon it?
10)“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.”
Guess these people are scared to be seen wonder why…….
LOL
Do they throw the baby out with the bath water ?
Endangering motorists is flagrantly imbicillic…to allow it weren’t to good either…I can speak for myself when I say it as it was was an imposition…people were imposing their view on others trying to go to work…now…I want to keep my job so stay out of my way…I have a right to drive on that road…I don’t want people in the road blocking traffic endangering public…in truth and in fact if there had been an accident these people in the road would have been the cause…damages are equifiable and liability falls apon the people being the cause of…and those controlling or allowing it to transpire…I saww cones…who supplied them?stand elsewhere this activity is likely to cause harm to others. If you close a road or distract drivers…it is public nuisance.
People shouting go home must go home thereselves….you go home with that shameful talk….we have this beautiful opportunity and you lot are being soooo nasty…..honestly…the word is nasty…
If this is racial …that would be even worse…really…it is shameful how you lot called out go home…cause mate…you can go home see.
I can’t tolerate…I won’t tolerate racism…that is disgusting and unlawful.
