National Debate Team Members Announced

Coaches for the Bermuda Debate Society have announced the four-strong squad set to represent Bermuda in the World Schools Debating Championships, which will take place in Stuttgart, Germany in July.

Volunteer coaches Akilah Beckles and Christianna Dakin announced 17-year-old Bermuda High School student Megan Sutcliffe as captain of a team that will include Namrata Bisht, 17, also of Bermuda High School, Bathsheba Jones, 17, of CedarBridge Academy, and Asha Symons, 15, of Warwick Academy.

A spokesperson said, “Training for the tournament began in September of last year and the four-strong team was selected from a skillful group of candidates who have been meeting twice a week to present on topical world issues and to debate impromptu motions in a formally adjudicated manner.”

“The World Schools Debating Championships is a premier debating tournament that has grown to include 66 registered teams. Bermuda is currently ranked at number 28. Bermuda will debate four prepared and four impromptu motions at the tournament, with the prepared motions anticipated to be released a few weeks prior to the tournament.

“The Bermuda Debate Society is a registered charity that seeks to encourage and promote the skill of debating throughout Bermuda’s schools. The Bermuda Debate Society was founded more than twenty years ago and has responsibility for organizing national debate competitions and fielding teams for international competition.

    Well done ladies for being selected to represent Bermuda. Your ranking in the World Schools Debating Championships of 28 out if 66 is admirable for Bermuda and says a lot for all the coaches and debaters before you.
