Workplace Anti-Bullying & Harassment Campaign
Saying they believe that “all workers have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work” and “workplace bullying and harassment should never be tolerated,” the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] has launched a ”Workplace Anti-Bullying and Harassment” campaign.
The Union said, “The BPSU believes that all workers have the right to be treated with dignity and respect at work. However, the Union recognizes that bullying and harassment is a major concern in many workplaces throughout the Island.
“According to University and College Union, workplace bullying and harassment is described as ‘unwanted contact which has the purpose [intentional] or effect [unintentional] of violating a person’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that person.”
“Oftentimes incidents of bullying go unreported and, as a result, the negative behaviour becomes organizational cultural norms.
“Workplace bullying and harassment should never be tolerated and, to this end, the BPSU has decided to launch a ‘Workplace Anti-Bullying and Harassment’ campaign.
“This week-long campaign will run from Monday, May 2nd through to Friday, May 6th, 2016 and will feature various events throughout the week. In addition, the BPSU will be launching a Special Workplace Anti-Bullying and Harassment Magazine.
“Our campaign will aim to:
- Raise awareness to workplace bullying and harassment
- Provide support for those who are subjected to bullying and harassment
- Promote a workplace free of bullying and harassment
“In recognition of the UN’s Anti-Bullying Day, BPSU cordially invites all members of the public to attend our Anti-Bullying & Harassment Open Forum [A Panel Discussion] on May 4th from 6pm-8pm at BPSU Headquarters.
“Panelists will include representatives from:
- the BPSU
- the Employee Assistance Programme [EAP]
- the Human Rights Commission
- a private psychological practice
“We invite you to be a part of this important discussion as the BPSU works to ensure the workplace is a healthy environment; free from bullying, harassment and discrimination.”

Leaked Internal Memo to BPSU and BIU stated: Do as we say, not as we do.
Wonder if this applies to all workers or just union workers? Wonder if this applies to work permit holders? Sadly I doubt both.
Surprising how this bullying and harassment in the work place happens in high end companies which you would never think would entertain such behaviour. The employment act does not cover such, persons need to go to the Human Rights as the Act covers more of these issues.
