Grease Interceptors To Be Mandatory Island-Wide

June 26, 2016

The Ministry of Health and Seniors is advising that effective September 2017 all commercial food establishments in Bermuda must equip their kitchen with an “approved type and adequately sized grease interceptor,” saying that this will “allow for the proper disposal of Fats, Oils and Greases [FOG] and thus minimise the chance of greaseballs”.

“This policy has applied to all restaurants in the city of Hamilton since 2014, but will now be expanded to include all restaurants island wide to control grease at source,” said the Minister of Health and Seniors, Jeanne Atherden.

“The clogging of sewerage systems by grease deposits has been a long-standing issue and can contribute to the formation of ‘grease balls’ that wash onto beaches.”

The Ministry said, “All permitted food service establishments will be subject to the following requirements:

  • “1] Install, operate, and maintain an approved type and adequately sized grease interceptor. A grease interceptor is a structure or device designed for the purpose of removing and preventing FOG from entering the sanitary sewer collection system. These devices are often chambered baffled tanks that slow the movement of waste water, allowing FOG to cool, coagulate and accumulate before entering the sewer. All grease interceptors must be approved by the Environmental Health Section of the Department of Health.
  • “2] All grease interceptors shall be readily and easily accessible for cleaning and inspection. Location of the grease interceptor must meet the approval of the Environmental Health Section of the Department of Health.
  • “3] Wastewater discharge FOG concentration from the grease interceptor, grease trap or alternative pre-treatment technologymust not exceed 100 milligrams per liter.
  • “4] All such grease interceptors shall be serviced and emptied of accumulated FOG waste content as required. Grease interceptors shall be kept free of inorganic solid materials such as grit, rocks, gravel, sand, eating utensils, cigarettes, shells, towels, rags, etc., which reduce the effective volume of the device.

“The User shall maintain a written record of inspection and maintenance for three years. All such records will be made available for on-site inspection by a representative of the Environmental Health Section of the Department of Health during all operating hours,” the Ministry added.

      • Mr Sparkle says:

Nothing more pathetic than the statement “the world will be abetter place when your kind is gone” – That statement sums up how sick our island is…

        • Paul Reveire says:

So I guess its ok for them to type ” convince people to join their pathetic political party?? ”

your kind has nothing to do with race, but if you choose to make it about race then go ahead.

The world will be a better place when ppl as kangoocar stop Bitching about everything and trying to get others to side with their slanted views, and it you in the same boat, check ya arse later as well

    • Take a dip says:

      In some hot grease, Kangoocar

    • Coffee says:

Is Kangocar still collecting the UBP/BDA/OBA greaseballs ? Or has he reverted back to his original state as Gollum the Troll (Lord of the Rings) ?

      • Trollolol says:

You are mistaken in referring to Gollum as a troll – he belongs a race of Hobbit known as river folk – he took on his appearance when corrupted by the one ring.

        Trollolol

    • Juice says:

Im not a PLP supporter, but this kind of post is really uncalled for.

  3. Real Deal says:

To tell you the true I don’t think the beach grease come for the restaurants. because we don’t have a coastguard we don’t know if it is coming from the cruise ships. but hey I could be wrong.

  4. voltage says:

How often our are beach waters tested for safety and where are the results published?

It is a reflection of our political priorities when we can spend $350,000 on a non-referendum yet not begin to stop pumping raw sewage into the seas that we and our guests swim in.

Only when our politicians start swimming off Seabright Avenue with friends and family regularly can we be assured that our sewage is being treated properly.

Where else do we pump raw sewage into out ocean and is there a map with all the sites identified?

  5. sage says:

    Grease unacceptable, raw sewage ok.

    • PhD. says:

What year are we in? 2016? We have events highlighting the dangers of micro beads in face washes but we aren’t marching in protest over raw sewage and grease being dumped?

      • sage says:

It really is time to stop treating our once pristine waters as a cesspool.

  6. Bermyman says:

    Really! Only took 2 years!

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

Try couple decades, the grease balls didn’t just start showing a couple years ago.

  7. retirement says:

How would this effect the grease from homes that go in the lines in the town of St George

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

It only effects commercial premise, it’s right here in the article. There is nothing regulating residential at this time, but then there shouldn’t be a heavy amount from any single residence, still, people shouldn’t be disposing their grease down their drains.

  8. Wayne says:

Kangoocar and the other 18 losers who likes what he said are typical examples of complete idiots…EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a discussion you have to put a spin on it and make it a PLP problem….I swear that you must be a Trump supporter as well.

If the Government and the Corporation of Hamilton would have built sewage treatment plants YEARS ago when you fools UBP were in power, this would have been a non issue. Instead all you did was spend huge money on pumping stations!

    • Anbu says:

And d pee el pee spend “huge” money on what exactly?!

  9. bluwater says:

Just get it done. No need to debate ancient times.
