June 4, 2016

A handful of protesters can be seen at the roundabout located at the airport entrance this morning [June 4] holding signs objecting to the airport redevelopment project.

There are also two protesters on Kindley Field Road, as well as signs placed on the road side, with one saying “Stop the airport project,” while another says “Stop the OBA bullying.”

    Rent A Crew.
They hit the street at the drop of a beef pie.

This crap is not good as it sends the wrong signal to tourists et al.

    Shalom.

    • Onion Juice says:

These same tourist protest when the feel that they are being F!@#ed too.

    • Busted says:

This is too funny for words.

Four people hiding behind cheap signs? Look at them! Just look at them!!

      How the PLP has fallen.

      • Onion Juice says:

They’re hiding because they knew how they were black balled for doing stuff like this back in de day.

      • mj says:

I didn’t see plp in there mentioned, and its the MESSAGE< not the people holding the sign only, the message from thousands and thousands of Bermudians who are being disrespected with privatization and on the hook to pay regardless if they get the deal, or it goes through or not!!! FREE MONEY GIVE AWAY!! SHOULD BE A SIGN!! DO YOU agree with that!its not so funny we look like wimps givin away money to every tom, dick and harry!! no accountability.. GOod going you guys!! stand up for OUR Rights!

    • Sav Vie says:

It a SHAME to see non Bermuda are showing there REAl color of BAD TASTE , please when you are a GEST and pretending to Love or Like the Bermudians and their Country then BE a honored GEST you may have THE PAPERS but not the RITE to INSULT the people like that we ALL in Europe / Asia are all keeping a close look on our net work and find it SAD and Insulting We think it’s time The President or Head of the country to step in and put a stop to thes HARSh words God Be with the Battered People ot the Bermuda

      • filobedo21 says:

Battered people of Bermuda. Surely you jest. They have their right to protest is all I will say. lol

      • Onion Juice says:

Why are you surprised, its a part of Bermuda’s History.

    • What?? says:

What signal is it sending exactly? That Bermudians are politically active? That they are involved? What exactly are they doing that tourist would object to? They aren’t blocking traffic. They aren’t interfering in any way. Those signs don’t say anything negative about tourists. Exactly what “wrong signal” is being sent to tourists? Or is it simply that you don’t agree with the message so you believe that these people should be muzzled?

  2. warlord says:

    Rent a crowd,can’t fix stupid

    • PhD. says:

Agree. And might I add, WATCH THE LANGUAGE! My child asked why it’s ok for some old lady, someone’s GRANNY, to be holding a sign with the word HELL on it. Try to muster up a little class, people.

And BTW – these people don’t look like they’ve ever seen the inside of the airport.

      • Raymond Ray says:

Look closely and see them who are “protesing”, they’re all senior citizens that probably have NOTHING better to do :-( I suggest they go and enjoy their retirerment because,(the new airport)is a done deal with sooooo much finanial benefits to the Island and it’s people.

        • Hot Button says:

What a silly comment. They live here and are entitled to a comment. are those your dying words. Last breath, Silly.

        • Onion Juice says:

Hey Stormin Norman, these senior citizens have EVERY RIGHT to protest, as these and others like them are the ones that sacrificed and fought against the powers that be in an era when mortgages were being pulled and jobs were being threatened, and for that they should be commended. To belittle their integrity is very disrespectful and childish, but its expected from you and your fans who criticize everything Black people in this island stand up against.
And as we reflect on the passing of The Greatest Boxer in History, let us not forget he stood up against and fought the same system and ideology that you and your fans support and benefited from.

        • JUNK YARD DOG says:

So where did the existing state of the art airport at the time, get us ?

    • Onion Juice says:

The beauty of Democracy, gotta love it.

  3. Truth says:

Bermuda once again showing that somewhere, beneath this kind and friendly exterior that we all love and cherish, there is the most xenophobic country in the Western hemisphere.

Face the facts folks – successive governments overspending like the good times would never end has caused Bermuda to be fully unable to pay for its own airport redevelopment.

Enter AECON to solve the problem, at a profit. Do you think they would just give the money to the project out of the goodness of their hearts?

Rather than just ‘NO’ to the airport project why not use some of this energy to come up with a real solution?

    • Its me again says:

Xenophobic because they are against a redevelopment project…

      Where do you get this.

      • Truth says:

(putting on my Primary school teacher voice for you):

“These people are xenophobic because one of their main issues is that the airport is being built by a Canadian company. Canadians are humans too, but they are not Bermudian. If the airport was being built by Bermudians (likely with cost overruns and not on time) these people would be more than happy for the government to go in to greater debt and enslave future generations of Bermudians to pay back the debt.”

“But you should be careful when saying the word ‘enslave’ because some of this same rent a crowd will take it to be a racial word, though it is certainly not in this context – remember, I meant enslaved to the debt and that applies to ALL Bermudians, regardless of race – but that would be thinking with logic and reason which does not seem to have a place in this discussion”.

        • Onion Juice says:

Ya, but de money would stay in Bermuda !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • bee says:

No it would not. It would be borrowed for the Chinese. Just like the rest of the PLP money that was “mis-spent”.

          • Alex says:

Who in Bermuda is lending $250 million right now? 99.99% chance that the loan would have to come in the form of foreign capital.

Either way, the money heads offshore.

    • Busted says:

      And your solution is…..

    • What?? says:

Where exactly is the xenophobia? Get a dictionary!

  4. Dr.Greg House says:

Please someone tell me the purpose of sitting out with a sign b****ing, come together as a respectable group and voice your concerns in the right place at the right time. Sitting at the airport really gives our tourists a great way to see the issues this island faces but perhaps not the first thing they should be seeing… JS

    • What?? says:

Why not? What harm is it doing? Peaceful and not interfering. I’m sure most of the tourists coming here have seen people protesting before. After all, most of those tourists are coming from countries that respect people’s right to speak out. Maybe we should try that here.

      • Alex says:

They also come from places where minorities have rights that aren’t subject to referendum. Your take on that?

        • What?? says:

I think the referendum is a horrible political cop-out but I’m not sure what that has to do with this story.

  5. Blind sheep says:

Like how the know the facts before they are released…seems like the plp was ready to make the same deal. Then they got voted out….things that make you go hummmmmm.

    • Onion says:

They were ready to make a much worse deal.

But their 2007 platform included increasing use of PPP. So they were for it before they were against it.

  6. Spit Bouy says:

Rent A crowd back out eh? Makes me want the Government to build it just to spite them and their PLP masters.

Honk if you agree? Hell no!! I’ll likely show a middle finger instead!

  7. serengeti says:

I count four people plus a policeman.

  8. Bermudainyouth says:

    75%= 6ppl lol what a joke

  9. Rhonnda Oliver says:

    Out of curiosity.
    75 per cent of what?

Where did we become a people who believe that if someone says it, it’s true?

    • Family Man says:

      That works for Donald Trump.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

The 75% came from an old poll that is regarded as having a biased question, the latest poll showed pretty much a 50/50 split, and that poll was about 6 months ago. But still people keep going back to the 75%. They also seem to come up with some $20m a year garauntee… and even if there was some $20m a year garauntee, I don’t have a problem with that because they are paying for this and have to be paid back in some way… just like we would be paying back a bank if we borrowed the money to do this, but at least we won’t be on the hook for the inevitable cost overruns should government actually try build it themselves.
The issues the PLP have with this is that; this project will actually help the OBA fulfil a promise to create jobs (even if it isn’t the 2000); and that they aren’t the ones awarding this contract, so they can’t give it to one of their own while telling the public that it will cost ‘x’, but not tell us that the cost only covers a building shell that would otherwise be useless unless they pay that contractor ‘y’ over the stated amount to actually fit it out for use… all this after they sign a contract for a shell design that doesn’t meet local standards… but it won’t be their fault, it would be the fault of the architect…

  10. Blind Sheep says:

Wow. 75% of 400 peoples polled….talking about using poll numbers to your advantahe

  11. Blind Sheep says:

Wow. 75% of 400 peoples polled.talking about using poll numbers to your advantage. What a bunch of jokers these guys are.

    • Paul Revere says:

Only blind sheep, because they don’t look like you or agree with you.
      You must be a star

      • Blind Sheep says:

It is he truth. Any poll that goes against their view, that is the line they use. They finally have one in their view and they are running with it.

  12. swing voter says:

most tourist arrive by boat…and business visitors dont give a rats azz..election next year IF you dont like the OBA,

  13. Terry says:

    Last comment.

Do you see your brothers sisters cousins young friends sitting, standing doing this?

    No.
    As yourself why.

Maybe they want to keep their jobs.
These guys may be nice people and well regarded.

    They are just being used.

The users should be made to sweep the causeway ……just because.

  14. Omni Present says:

Must be the ones who never actually use the airport.

  15. Sage says:

Bunch of kool-aid drinking idiots. Was fake hunger striker there??

    • airportgate says:

people like you deserve to be told, grow up stop hating because you disagree and bring something meaningful to the table to discuss.

  16. King Jammys says:

Where were these protesters when the PLP ran Bermuda into the ground?

  17. Mike says:

Probably in for the long haul too. the crowds will get bigger if the construction starts.

No doubt they will lay down in the path of that too.

Cue PLP…..”look how strongly true Bermudians feel about this”!

    So bloody predictable.

    • Raymond Ray says:

I have to disagree…The people will be working and isn’t this ignorance also about Bermuians not having jobs? Just like all the other B/S we’ve seen over “upmteen years” this too will settle down. As we say, “water will find its own level”

  18. Paul Revere says:

I’m lost for words for all those naysayers who talk about the persons objecting to what they believe in.
Everytime I turn on the news, US, Canada, UK, Europe and even Asia, there are people protesting for or against something.
So who cares what some tourist sees?
Most of the people wh come here for vacation, see and live in way worst conditions that what we are going through.
Just like the certain people who ONLY come out and March when it has to do with work permits or gay marriage or anything that’s non Bermudian.
Get a life, and allow others to have a voice.

    • Pride says:

So you are saying being gay is non Bermudian?

    • Blind Sheep says:

They should protest on the 800 million that went missing, The dealings with the Port Royal golf course, The money the BIU owe but the government of the day forgive.should I go on…

    • Sage says:

There’s a difference between having a voice and being a mindless tool being told what to say.

  19. RebeLutionary says:

All you cowards ever do is attack when citizens stand up for a cause. You continue to underestimate protestors in small numbers when one lone hunger striker who started out on the hill got the power and support that nearly shut down this Govt last March. It’s ironic that the so called ‘kind and friendly exterior’ we supposedly enjoy today on this island is thanks to a small number of protestors from the past standing up to make changes for civil rights. Imagine if they stayed quiet like most cowards such as yourselves want them to do? We would have no progress.

    • Mike says:

You make a point – so let me answer it.

They are not standing up for a cause. Not to day – not yesterday or tomorrow. If they were, they would have stood up when the PLP wanted to spend $500 million some years ago to build an airport. And god knows what that $500 m would be today.

Even Christopher famous thinks we should be able to do it for around $89 mill – so go ask him.

But “no”….nowhere were they to be seen protesting years ago. Happy in the knowledge that the PLP was going to spend (yet again) more money.

This is not about a cause. It’s about raw politics.

    • Sage says:

And where were you Rebel?? Watching from your air conditioned office no doubt?

    • Trollsbane says:

At least half of your four freedom fighters deliberately covered their faces for the camera, and you call coward while posting under a screen name. And for the rotten cherry on top; the falsely indignant and manipulative comparison of this pitiful scene to the fundamentally world changing importance of the civil rights movement. These folks are being shamefully used by those who think like you. Having nothing of substance to offer, resorting to the same old same old; appeal to race and emotion to muster the same “blindfaithful” supporters over and over again.

You never know… maybe there are plans for Furbie to embody his troops around this one, too. Tweedy will lead all in prayer against injustice. Then your 4 freedom fighters can bask in the glory of knowing how important their roles were… in holding our country, back yet again.

  20. steve says:

Why name Aecon and berate them? For some of our bredren, a mindset exist in – expats, foriegn companies and all things not Bermudian are expected to come here make a donation to the country …then leave.”Dat dere company go a pack a nerve tryin to make a profit” …I would find it all funny but I just cant stop crying.

  21. Leroy says:

Ok listen listen listen Linda Listen AIRPORT is one word Duuuuh these lot need to carry a dictionary we all wanna know what did they do with all the money they got for school fees ????

  22. Average Bermudian says:

    fey ?

    ?
    don’t forget him

  23. TimBuc says:

This airport deal is gone through hate to say so but for crying out loud it’s not freaking HUB airport!!! We have bigger fish to fry on our little rock!!! Geez

  24. bluebird says:

two Hundred and Fifty Million dollars investment in Bermuda and it is not “ADDED” to our national DEBT of over $2BILLION DOLLARS at a cost of $1/2 Million dollars per day in interest, thank you PLP.
It is not up to Government to provide or create “JOBS”
It is up to Government to provide the conditions where Private Enterprise will flourish and provide “JOBS” that pay TAXES to the Government so that fat people can sit at the airport in nice weather and hold up signs.
Don’t see them there in the WINTER???
They are a few of the left overs from the Louis Brown Evans days as the young people are much more educated and have the internet so they can make up there own minds.

  25. bluebird says:

I did not know that when these Acon people spend there money to build this airport that when they leave they are going to “STEAL” the airport and take it with them.Acording to the signs, bet you did not know that????

  26. Bones says:

You know what is so amusing is that all interested in this airport deal being hustled through. What , ask yourselves with two deteriorating bridges , amazing isn’t it how both allow ” ONLY ” access to airport. Just saying Mr n Mrs Bermuda. Hotel in St Georges Brand new Airport and failing bridges. Just saying, maybe we can use the new ferries to commute from St George , first stop “Airport” next stop otherside of temporary , er, bailey bridge. Just saying. Please fix our only access to our new Airport.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

The bridges present another issue from the airport, by all estimates, it is going to cost a couple hundred million to do replace them, but government doesn’t have that money to spend, so they will have to go to a PPP. But with a PPP, the private part of that will want their money back, so what will we do, toll the bridges??? Oh yeah, that will work well here. This is why a permanent fix (which the only solution would be to rebuild them) is so hard to do right now, we don’t have the resources to finance such a project, but through a PPP, we can finance a new airport because there is the possiblity for ROI to the Private in the PPP in such a venture.

  27. Widget says:

Yeah I drove by, din’t honk nor did the other ten cars before and after me. Must have been a lonely day for those old people. Stop the political bull and support the airport, the existing airport is falling apart.

  28. concerned says:

Look if those persons don’t want a new airport in St George’s, they can go to Darrell’s Island and resurrect that one for their use. And those persons at the airport love to get up and go, seen them at the airport so they know the condition our airport is in.

  29. James Rego says:

A close look at the protesters, shows, they are not the folks out of work! Let’s hear from those needing a job!

  30. Navin Pooty Tang Johnson says:

Hospital Wing….$30,000,000 a year adjusted for inflation for 30 years

  31. Rick Olson says:

Let’s go with the PLP 500 million plan and finance it through our pension money since it is such a good investment……….

  32. overboard says:

Rent a crowd are present at all protests!

  33. JUNK YARD DOG says:

Not many year from now all Airports will become redundant.

If you think for one moment the new T.A.C. airport will last 30 your dreaming.

Travel modes will change as they have done over the last 30 years its called progress.

Commercial buildings deteriorate in less than 30 years, maintenance is 50 % of cost.

Why they never think of space conversion beats me.

    Make your own long list ! Indoor golf; bowling alleys;
    Amusement park.

We could covert the existing building into a chicken farms even for live stock . Bermuda could get back into exporting something again or stocking cruise ships.

We have no sustainable alternatives, all the fish have gone.

Victoria row and all those other demolished buildings could have made double dip chicken farms for boxed chicken and eggs, the container ship return empty.

    • filobedo21 says:

JUNK YARD DOG: Once again suggesting a business for someone else to start; but you are not planning to start a business yourself. ! get it.

  34. Rich says:

And yet 56% of registered voters polled also supported Pathways to Status in the latest scientific poll while 29% were against. These individuals should have been protesting in favour given this seemingly profound respect for ‘representing the will of the people’.

One standard for us. One standard for everyone else.

  35. steve says:

HONK- if you know it will be the sons of the sign holders that will be unemployed do to scrapping of a foreign funded construction project!

  36. warlord says:

I see Peggy Burns there today,so we know now that it is all about hate and race not about the airport

  37. Coffee says:

Nobody is protesting a new airport , many are protesting the rotten deal .

  38. Need Peace says:

This group is a tiny representation of an Apolitical body. They have studied the facts relating to this farce of a deal. This deal did not fly for majority of the OBA membership after the available facts were presented. These same facts were presented to tourists who ALL agreed that this is a bad deal for us. So please educate yourselves on the FACTS. Fact sheets are available if you care to involve yourselves but something tells me that you only care that it’s an OBA initiative. There was an astounding amount of honks from all hues so don’t get it twisted. You sit at your computers trying to invent ways to sound clever but if you cannot see this deal for what it is then you’re failing miserably and should hang up your keys. This nonsense about the PLP building an airport for $500M never saw the light of day so what is your point? If you are prepared to get rocked by another government, that is your choice. All of your insults and criticism will never make it right. Remember, it ain’t over til the fat lady sings!

  39. Seriously? says:

I don’t care who builds it, or for how much. I just would like to get on and off an airplane dry!!! Everyone goes on about the stepping off and enjoying the view. You aren’t allowed to sit and enjoy the view, it is against airport regulations… you aren’t allowed to take photos… it is against airport regulations. Get on a gangplank, be dry, get through customs, THEN walk out and enjoy the beauty!! Bring on a 21st century airport please!!!

  40. Sara says:

I was so shocked to hear Burt complaining about all the Moody’s downgrading since the OBA have been in office as if they are supposed to be able to work miracles on the horribly irresponsible spending that caused these downgrades in the first place. I swear you really have to be a true idiot to speak like him. I can’t believe that he is trying to pin this on the OBA. THE PLP messed up the math Burt!
