‘Questions For Referendum Have Not Changed’

June 23, 2016

The Parliamentary Registrar said they have “been made aware that there are voice notes and videos being circulated on social media that appear to be misleading,” and said the questions for today’s referendum “have not changed.”

Pennos Wharf Polling Station Bermuda June 23 2016

The statement said, “The Parliamentary Registrar has been made aware that there are voice notes and videos being circulated on social media that appear to be misleading.

“Voters are asked not to forward these messages to others as it is an offence under the Referendum Act 2012 [PDF].

“The Questions for this referendum have not changed and are straight forward questions. They are ‘Are you in favour of same sex marriage in Bermuda?’ and ‘Are you in favour of same sex civil unions in Bermuda?

“The voter has an option of answering either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for each question by marking the appropriate box.”

All he did was say ‘voteyesys’. How is this shovelling?

      • Mike Hind says:

It’s not about opinions. It’s about denying equal access to rights to Bermudians for absolutely no valid reason.

  5. Cow Polly says:

Having just voted, I left the polling station wondering why on earth I was even asked to vote on something that ultimately does not affect me one iota. My life will not change depending on the outcome of this referendum. My legal rights and benefits remain the same. How different for those in the LGBT community whose happiness lies in the hands of people who do not know what it is like to be them.

    • Bermie says:

I also had time for reflection when I was standing, waiting to vote. I asked myself how would I feel if I was not straight and my well-being was being left up to someone who did not have a vested interest in the outcome of this vote.

What a horrid position to put everyone in. Human rights up for popular vote and those of us who are morally opposed to this state of affairs are obliged at the same time to subscribe to it so that we can make our voices heard in support of dignity and respect for all. It adds further insult that this referendum is non-binding and that it wastes precious resources that would be better spent in protection and support of our community as a whole.

YES YES should have been made as a decision by the Government for the people. As an aside, straight people should also have the right to civil unions, if they do not want the full obligations/rights of marriage. Don’t get it twisted. Civil unions are not a non-religious form of marriage. Marriage gives more rights and is only religious if conducted within the context of a church, mosque, synagogue, etc.

    • reddamtibi says:

Cow Polly gay marriage or civil unions do not affect you? I imagine it is very cozy in that bubble you live in – but know this…I just voted and it was clear (audibly) that 90 of the people I saw and observed voted no no – judging by their conversations (that they were more than willing to share) at least.

But worry not because it will not affect you…

If only the pathways to citizenship would have worked there may have been a few more Bermuda passports issued that would have no doubt fortified the yes yes movement.

      • hmmm says:

How does a YES/YES vote affect you?

      • Cow Polly says:

It is not I that lives in the bubble my friend but you and your 90 who refuse to open their eyes and their hearts to people who do not follow your narrow minded ways. And you hide behind the argument that you are driven by some higher power that will reward you with life eternal!
Well, just remember, your god created gay people too and will open his arms to welcome them into the hereafter alongside all other believers and if he has a sense of humour, well guess who you’ll be seated next to!

      • PBanks says:

How *would* someone getting married to someone of the same sex (or getting a civil union with them) affect someone else, by the way?

    • format says:

Absolutely 100% agree. Who has the right force their will upon another human being? This referendum shouldn’t even be being held – total embarrassment for Bermuda.

    • Hurricane says:

@ Cow Polly, what’s worse is that it’s none binding. The OBA didn’t have the balls to govern on this one and have clearly wasted the tax payers money. And to think, ” money doesn’t grow in trees”

    • Portia says:

Anyone who states that SSM “does not affect” anyone else but the couple wanting to marry, is either being dishonest or wearing blinders. The truth is, that marriage is a public institution, and the way in which it is defined and viewed DOES create ripple effects throughout society. Case in point, we now have the teachers union in the UK wanting to educate children about homosexual relationships:

      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/relationships/11519235/Its-time-gay-relationships-were-part-of-the-school-curriculum.html

      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/11517177/Promote-gay-relationships-as-positive-in-school-teachers-say.html

This affects countless families who have reared their children to believe in traditional marriage or the tenets of the Muslim, Jewish or Christian faiths. The same pushes for pro-gay curricula are also happening in the U.S. and Canada. It is a very systemic form of indoctrination where parents no longer have the say in what is taught to their children when they enter school, all because marriage has been re-defined.

But of course, we are constantly told “this doesn’t affect anyone else.” Not to mention the fact that people who choose to believe in traditional marriage are quickly loosing their right to even voice a dissenting opinion without ridiculous and scathing name-calling.

      This affects everyone!

      • reality says:

If you are using religion as a reason for voting against this, please explain why you or others in your mind-set are not being so vocal, not picketing or holding prayer virgils, etc. about other things that are taught in the bible – such as adultery, divorce, stealing, killing, jealousy, lying, using the Lord’s name in vain, eating shellfish/ pork, etc, etc. Help me understand why there appears to be picking and choosing from the bible what is followed or important to society in this day and age.

Also, please pass the stones around.

      • Mike Hind says:

School curriculums are now changed because of marriage?

Are you remotely serious with this?

You are, with a straight face, defending your perceived right to discriminate and treat people as less than you.

This entire post is so mindblowingly dishonest, I can’t even begin to imagine where your mind is at.

      • Thinking says:

Thank you portia only fools think it will be the same Bermuda the crazy sick people want to take over bda then people like us have no say have no rights to voice our opinion no more rights to talk we will be put away for discriminate it’s a No No whenever it becomes yes yes Bermuda crime rate will be to the roof if you think it’s bad now just wait until few years from now

      • Hurricane says:

@Portia, this is just hogwash! There is nothing to suggest that SSM will have any ripple effect because a Teachers Union in the UK want to educate children about homosexual relations, If you believe that to not go the route of SSM would mean homosexuals will go away, maybe you should take your blinders off. There will always be same sex couples in our midst and persons who want to teach about homosexual relations. SSM would do absolutely nothing to change this.

Cow Polly that is so true. Such a shame not everyone thinks the same . Yes Yes and 100 times, Yes.

  9. YesYes says:

My vote “Yes” X and “Yes” X cast approximately an hour ago – because man made traditions and laws aside, we are all “supposed to be” EQUAL!

  10. Will says:

Looks like the nono team is getting desperate if they have to resort to underhanded tactics like this.

  11. sub says:

Religious reasons do not support a No, No vote. You can vote against same sex marriage while voting for same sex civil unions. Anyone claiming to vote No No on religious grounds is just plain wrong.

  12. frank says:

for all those out there you keep saying that we should do
what Europe did well it was those same people over there in Europe
and America that said it was okay to have black people as slaves
and for those who say that the bible is and old book that is not
    important in todays times
well read it again because there are things happening in the world
today that were mentioned in the bible many years ago

    • Mike Hind says:

Yes. and those traditions were gotten rid of, just like we’ll get rid of THIS unjust tradition.

  13. oh dear says:

If any ‘act’ is carried out by guys that is illegal, does a yes vote mean that act is no longer illegal?

  14. Coffee says:

I voted know that civil unions lead to SSM . I also voted know that Bermuda would never recognize SSM .

    • Um Um Like says:

I didn’t no that there was a know option on the ballot.

      • Ed Case says:

Coffee didn’t no what she/he was doing.

        • Ed Case says:

In your case I would be in favour of a literacy test requirement for voting.

    • Mike Hind says:

And yet, you have never had the courage to say WHY…

      Sad and pathetic.

    • Truth says:

y were you even allowed to vote you bloody idiot

  15. You Do You says:

Why do I care what another “couple” is defined as. Marriage is so sacred, right? That is why people NEVER commit adultery, NEVER have kids out of wedlock? THANK GOD, people don’t ever divorce.

We cannot let marriage be cheapened by the LBGT community! (sarcasm)

You worry about what happens behind your door, not what happens at your neighbors house.

  16. YUP says:

Wasn’t a problem all this time. What’s the problem now? Might as well bring in Burger King, Taco Bell, legalize guns and the rest right?

    • Mike Hind says:

Huh? What does this have to do with Marriage Equality.

  17. cindy says:

We as Bermudians cannot support same sex marriage or same sex civil unions. Talking about sustainability of the Bermudian population, we may as well put a chastity belt on. Two people of the same sex cannot reproduce. Two people of the same sex will by example model and perpetuate that behavior. I think it is selfish, abnormal, and immoral. Yes, let some immigrate. We know what we have, but we don’t know what we’re getting. Few of us have and a few more may eventually emigrate. Our population is aging. Many youth are dying. The government should NEVER AGAIN talk SUSTAINABILITY. They value posessions over people.

  18. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

Ok…This referendum is done n over with…what’s the next crime we can make legal because a minority wants to…equality is a b!t@# inna?? Now u have set a precedence…how will me smoking cannabis affect YOUR LIFE..??

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

      Oh …an i won’t entertain hypotheticals either.

    • Mike Hind says:

      This isn’t a crime. It’s just people.

And if you want to start a movement, a REAL movement, to legalize marijuana in a real, safe way, addressing all concerns with facts and reality?

I’m there. I got your back.

Because you smoking cannabis has NOTHING to do with me.

Just like someone else’s marriage has NOTHING to do with me.
