OBA Launches Website On Airport Development

July 18, 2016

[Updated] The One Bermuda Alliance has launched a new website which they said “aims to provide Bermudians with the most accurate and up-to-date information available about the construction of the new terminal at LF Wade International Airport” and “seek to correct the rampant misinformation which has been spread by the opposition.”

The OBA said, “This website, www.BermudaAirportFacts.com, is to serve as an information hub that anybody can access to monitor the latest updates, find answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and view videos that will help people better understand why building this new terminal is so important if Bermuda wants to remain a top destination for travellers.”

OBA Chairperson Senator Lynne Woolridge said: “The website was created to provide the facts on the development of a new terminal at the LF Wade International Airport.

“There has been so much misinformation spread throughout the community about this project that many people have been thoroughly confused by the allegations.

“We believe people need an authoritative source of good, solid information about the airport project,” she said. “We want people to be able to find accurate information about how it’s to be paid for and what benefits it will bring to Bermudians.

“Those benefits, we know, will include jobs, much improved infrastructure and a new facility that will show Bermuda off as a first tier, first class, first world destination for holidaymakers and international business visitors alike.”

Update 2.50pm: Shadow Transport Minister Lawrence Scott said, “This website is nothing more than a poor attempt at trying to justify Minister Richards and the OBA’s decision to go full steam ahead with a sole sourced untendered capital project which will see Bermuda lose operational control of ‎this country’s only gateway for 30 years, all while a foreign entity takes the revenue generated from the airport and we [the Bermudian taxpayer] is left still paying aspects of the overhead such as [$191,000 BELCO bill, and for the airport security police and crash fire rescue personnel].

“Numerous polls show that the majority of Bermudians are against this deal in its current form and there are those who are of the opinion that the fact the OBA government is still pushing ahead with it shows a glaring lack of leadership, and with the numerous problems and shortcomings associated with the Dunkley Administration’s mishandling of this entire ‎project is something too big for a website to fix.”

  1. Jeremy Deacon says:

Nowhere does it say the forecasts support a $250m investment – where are the stats that show there will be enough income from users to support the repayments and make this development sustainable.
I don’t think the fact that we need a new aiport is disputed – but there’s been no supporting information that says this much has to be invested – could we invest $100m and still have an airport that was appropriate to the use it is going to get?

To me, those are the crucial numbers.

    • Bully Beef says:

First, it is not a new airport. It is a terminal building, ramps and fuel farm. You don’t have to do much research to see that a small airport terminal will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. A bigger terminal such as what is proposed at LaGuardia, billions of dollars.

Does anyone remember what we paid for the new hospital? Think about it.

  2. The PLP Did it!?!?! says:

So this is what the OBA paid to build?

Good work if you can get it.

    • Unbelievable says:

No one has paid for anything.

      • ALodge says:

The website was paid for by the OBA. It says so in the footer…

I wonder how much a simple Ruby on Rails site goes for these days.

  3. Broken Glass says:

the airport will be paid from peoples pension funds

    • Just the Tip says:

      That is a lie

    • smh says:

Paid by pension funds? Is this more of the “sustained campaign of misinformation” encouraged by DREB? Burt is the one that wants to use our pension funds to pay foreign investors as part of his proposed “diversity fund”. Be afraid, very afraid

    • Onion says:

      That is a lie.

The PLP borrowed massively from pension funds but the OBA so far has moved dramatically to strengthen pension fund solvency.

    • Zevon says:

No, but Grand Atlantic was paid for out of your pension funds.
We never found out who owned that land before the government bought it, did we.

  4. Y-Gurl says:

The document that should follow this one hopefully is ” why Bermuda needs a new government”

    • Just the Tip says:

And before that one there should be one called “A reminder of what the PLP did and what they screwed up” have it open with how they had done consulting for replacing the airport and how that plan was double what this one is.

      • innna says:

yup… but that would be anti bermudian to do

      • Onion says:

The PLP is also promising that if reelected they will go back to screwing the country.

  5. 32n64w says:

Ironic that Mr. Scott forgot to mention the PLP already spent more than $3 million on consulting fees for a new airport and were geared up to spend a further $500 million of taxpayer dollars to build a new facility which by their own admission is woefully in need of replacement.

  6. Broken Glass says:

does anyone really believes the airport is going to look remotely like the picture they have on that website.

  7. Jeremy Deacon says:

also, I’d like to know: if the OBA is paying to promote a Govt project, is that blurring the line that should exist between party and government?

    • Curious says:

      What’s the alternative?
Spending Govt funds to promote it?
Have a feeling that would go down like a lead balloon

    • Zevon says:

The website says it was paid for by the OBA. So there goes that complaint.

  8. clearasmud says:

Any factual information should be coming directly from the people making the decisions which is Minister of Finance and his team at the Ministry of Finance not from the OBA party! Mrs. Woolridge has no direct involvement in the negotiations for this project!

  9. Long Bay Trading Co. says:

At the same time, in order to put a LONG OVERDUE HALT ON THE PLP’s relentless disinformation campaign orchestrated by DREB and his posse, please also state clearly and simply the facts surrounding Pathways to Status and the recent proposed changes to the Transportation Act to include 150cc buggies ……………… OH and lets not forget SSM !! The amount of untruths and deliberate misinformation surrounding these issues is truely staggering and is seriously damaging any much needed recovery Bermuda desperately needs. The PLP destroyed Bermuda in their 14 year of reign, YET why are we giving them such a free reign to do it all over again???!!!?? They are STILL DESTROYING Bermuda with their deliberate lies and misinformation – It may be a different Format, but it will have the same outcome.

I am soooooooooo done with the PLP and their constant lies, divise, hateful, verbal diarrhoea that is deliberately filled time after time with untruths.
The OBA is not perfect by any means but they sure are better than the alternative. Thank God for Summer Holidays – a rest from the House is a welcomed and long overdue break.

  10. A**tounded says:

The car rental will be in arrivals…

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Who says car rentals will be available? This is the kind of nonsense being spewed from the PLP Committee of Nonsense. The sad thing is that so many gobble it up without question.

  11. Unbelievable says:

Who cares who paid for this website!!!!! nYes the lines may be blurred but it may not really be that big of deal.

Read the facts they’ve given about the airport that actually dispels the PLP’s misinformation campaign. That’s what really matters.

  12. M.C. Beauchamp says:

Bravo OBA. Bravo. Bermuda has a business plan, and the airport, car rentals, new hotels and America’s Cup will all drive more visitor arrivals. This P3 approach fits. Many more people will find jobs in the new airport than the crumbling disaster we have today. We will get more flight arrivals than we currently have and will be able to manage those we do receive today better. Now this is progress.
