Open Houses To Showcase New Airport Designs
As part of the design unveil for the proposed new airport, an open house exhibition is giving the public an opportunity to view the new designs, the government said.
The exhibit was at BUEI on Friday and Saturday, and will be located at Bella Vista Bar & Grill at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton on July 18 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm and Penno’s Wharf in St George’s on July 19 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
Video of the design unveiling presentation:
“The new renderings, led by Aecon, show a larger facility designed with sustainability in mind to minimize environmental impact and maximise efficiencies,” a spokesperson said.
“Modern conveniences commonplace in many airports, especially high-tech services, will enhance the departure and arrivals process so that the new airport can meet industry quality standards for customer service, security, and immigration.
“The public is encouraged to view this exhibit at Port Royal and Penno’s Wharf.”

A building that doesn’t have sufficient bathroom facilities….. SMDH!!!!
They better make Customs Arrivals bigger than what we just witness in the video walk through or everyone arriving will be lined up the minute we exit the aircraft on the Skywalk. Bermuda Customs is the slowest line up in the World compared to other islands who have more flights per day.
Friends and family give away.
Please point me to where this is fact.
I love that I’ll be able to take a dip in the big Olympic sized pool just before I fly out or just after I land. Just what I need!
Take a S!@# in it while you’re at it, cause thats what it smells like.
That’s just your upper lip Onion Juice…
Unimpressed!!!
Looks very nice . I count 6 gates. Back in the late 60s our terminal had 9 aircraft parking pads. This was a time when we had wide bodied & larger narrow body aircraft than we get today. Also, where is the car parking? Looks to be enough for staff only. Maybe. Where will long-term & private arrival pickup parking be?
Bring on the few protesters. They got free time. Most, collecting a handsome pension
If you can’t see that this government is slowly BUT surely steering OUR island out of the mess of the previous (PARTY)! You’re completely blind!!
You must be one of the idiotic OBA Ministers that are continually trying to keep your fat pay check @ $150,000 after the 2017 election!!!!
Nobody said that we didn’t need a airport upgrade, but this is like buying a fleet of Lamborghinis to deliver the mail. Yes it looks nice, but is it appropriate for our needs, what is it gonna cost in the long run, and what’ll be the cost of upkeep and maintenance. While I may not agree with some of the OBAs politics (some are just as bad if not worse than certain politicians that are vilified from “that other party), I can say that there are some in the party that are trying to make a genuine effort. So with that said let me ask you a quick question… Let’s pretend “the other party” presented this plan… That objectivity that just popped into your mind… Use it for a hot second.
Don’t have to pretend, they did and it was ‘grander’ and far more expensive. Infact if i remember this is a watered down version of what PLP had planned (the got a differant design it seems.)
This design literally costs half that of the PLP’s proposals, from 2008. Further, the way the contract is structured means that any overages will hit the construction company, not the Bermuda tax payer.
Which should feel almost surreal given the PLP’s track record on delivery of capital projects to budget.
But it’s an OBA supported anything, so let’s complain and protest. As you were.
Perhaps the plp are angry that they took too long to get started on the $1B airport which they could have gotten rich off of….The OBA are not perfect at public relations but they do have our best interest at heart.
We’re not getting a Lamborghini, we are getting a purpose built facility. The design for airports has changed dramatically since WW2, so the new design reflects not just current standards, but for possible expansion. Do you know what standards airports have to meet. This isn’t some regional hub, we have to meet international standards for flights in and out of Europe and North America for at least 3 different regulatory bodies on top our local. The design has to take into account for processing at least 3 airlines out at a time at the check-in desk, as well as receiving at least 3 airlines at a given time through both immigration and luggage pick up, and at peak we have had as many as 5 planes at gates; we need to be able to accommodate seating space for each of the 6 gates plus should have somewhere for a children’s zone, and retail/duty free. We also have to have a completely separated immigration hall, Customs and luggage hall and also have a US pre-clearance that has to be designed in, which means that US bound flights need to be able to separated from the others with US immigration services and separate security screening. At the same time, you want to exploit as much natural light and create a sense of open space.
The short falls I see in this design is that we might be short changing ourselves by about one gate with only 6 jetways and I am also unimpressed with the water feature, frankly I think it is just excessive and will be a pain to maintain in the long run, especially after a hurricane.
Well said, many won’t realise we have to keep up with international standards and safety regulations as it is an international airport.
The water feature is really the result of digging the fill for elevation of the site, creating a big hole and thus a pond. It will then be used for run off from the facility and seep out to the sea. That’s the plan anyway.
Don’t see a rain shelter outside for dropoffs and adequate bathrooms plus for disabled and entrance to enter bathroom that old one never had. Why have someone from outside telling us what we can figure out ourselves. Not impressed by the schools and hospital layout now. Too much wasted space
I especially like the hospitals 5 storey hole in the centre, and those doors leading to an edge with no railings.
Reject it !
That’s what you are…rejected!
Looks like every “rubber stamped” airport around the world…where are the unique Bermudian features? Pastel colours? Nope…white Bermuda roof? Nope…Nice touch with the kites but sadly not enough to impress me! Try again!
I absolutely agree. This is the first thing visitors will see and it’s just so …blah. We should be proudly showing off our style.
It is an airport terminal. It is not some piece of art. It must be functional, first & foremost. From being able to arrive at the departure area & get out of vehicles in the dry, no matter the weather, to arriving by air & loading into vehicles in the dry, no matter the weather, the building is a tool & it must work.
If it looks much like other functional terminals around the world, so be it. This is not the first terminal the designers have worked on. If it can be given a little Bermuda flair in the building design, great. Denvers DIA Jepperson Terminal has a roof reminicent of the the snowcapped Rockys not far away. The interior decoration will set it apart. Baltimore’s BWI looks like so many other terminals on the outside but inside the cues are taken from the nearby Chesapeake Bay.
I agree that Bermuda needs a new airport. The airport we have is way out of date, it’s time for a new one but…. That airport needs to be more Bermudian, show more of Bermuda inside of it, have Gombey suits up stuff like that. Another issue is pricing, don’t go spending a lot of money on this airport if it don’t look the part, add a cover for when people come to drop off just incase it rains, add more bathrooms more areas for food drink etc… We aren’t the first island to seek overseas funding for a new airport we surely won’t be the last, we need to stop complaining and let jus see how it goes… I’m not an OBA supporter but I do support that’s it’s about time we get/got this new airport in the making
who cares about departures – tourism experience is driven by the arrivals experience. Speed that up.
Yawn.
Not a fan… not enough Bermudian design elements, too American, and looks like an expensive rubber stamp proposal to get the money flowing into peoples pockets. More thought needs to be put into this!
Aecon said more time and thought and input gathering has gone into this project than any other terminal they have built.
Looks just as a modern 21st century airport terminal should. It doesn’t really concern me too much that it doesn’t look “Bermudian”, as long as air passengers can move through it efficiently and comfortably, and the building itself is hi-tech and energy efficient which is what’s most important when it comes to airports. We can’t keep lagging behind other destinations as far as infrastructure.
Agreed and besides in every airport i’ve been in look the same on the outside but the local flare is inside with the artwork and sculptures
I know, right? I can’t really understand why many will reject the way the new terminal looks. There’s a reason why all modern airports today are built with large, open-air, mostly steel and glass designs- all for practicality and safety. Much easier and quicker to evacuate an open space building in the event of an emergency than smaller, more restrictive areas, like the current terminal. Also the risk of fire is lower. All these things are considered in the design process.
We went to the presentation at the BUEI. No one was there. There weren’t many there the day before, and yet the complaints……
Did not see and i could have missed it, the area for US customs. I saw the security for departures next to check in, but i did not see an area for US customs.
we need 2 bridges and a cause way first.
Then find someone to fund them.
The OBA have lost the plot, they are so far apart from Bermuda it doesn’t make sense they should stay, it’s not essential, it’ll be like the PLP’s hospital fiasco and hopefully will be the end of the OBA in the next election, put the vote to spend to the people. OBA….Ousted Because of Airport
The bridges tuit are in disrepair…traversing to and from is unsafe.
