Court: Man Admits Stealing Turkey Sandwich

September 14, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court, a 45-year-old man admitted stealing a turkey sandwich from a gas station and was ordered to reimburse the establishment for the value of the sandwich.

Ross Parsons admitted that he stole a $9.50 turkey sandwich from the BUZZ eatery inside the 24 hour Tiger Mart in Hamilton.

The Crown Prosecutor told Senior Magistrate Juan Wolffe that around 3:00am on 8th September, staff observed him take a sandwich from the shelf and immediately leave the store without paying.

Police were called and attended. Police found Mr Parsons outside the establishment. To Police, Mr Parsons said: “Yes, I took a sandwich. Here is the evidence.”

Questioned by the Senior Magistrate, Mr Parsons told him that he was hungry and had been unemployed for more than a year. The Senior Magistrate told him that there were places where he could go to get a free meal. Mr Parsons replied: “Not at three o’clock in the morning.”

The Senior Magistrate noted that Mr Parsons last appearance in Court had been in 2013, and ruled that Mr Parsons would be given a Conditional Discharge but would have to reimburse BUZZ $9.50 for the value of the sandwich and also cover part of BUZZ’s costs in bringing the action.
