Flight Diverts After ‘Possible Lightning Strike’
[Updated] A “possible lightning strike” resulted in a JetBlue flight scheduled to travel from New York to Bermuda diverting to Logan Airport in Boston today [Sept 19].
An NECN story said, “JetBlue Flight 1731 had left John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City on Monday morning when the pilot reported a possible lightning strike after the plane’s radar went out around 9:30 a.m., about 15 miles outside of Boston.
“Massport says the plane landed at Logan at 9:44 a.m. without incident. No one was injured on board, state police said, which responded to support Massport’s police and fire crews as the plane came in for landing.

A Daily Star story said, “The JetBlue flight 1731 was heading to Bermuda from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport when it was struck by the bolt, 7News reported.
“The crew declared an emergency and the flight was diverted to Logan Airport in Boston to make an emergency landing. The Airbus 320 landed without incident at around 9.25am local time, CBS Boston reported.”
A Boston.com story said, “JetBlue Flight 1731 was en route from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Bermuda when it was diverted to Boston to address a “non-critical equipment issue,” said JetBlue spokesman Morgan Johnston.
“The aircraft landed safely at Logan at 9:44 a.m. No passengers were injured.
“Johnston said the flight crew reported a possible lightning strike after the plane was already on its way to Boston. Maintenance crews are inspecting the plane and passengers will be accommodated on another flight to Bermuda.
“We’re not entirely sure that it was a lightning strike,” he said.
Update 5.03pm: A JetBlue spokesperson said, “JetBlue flight 1731 safely landed at Boston Logan at 9:44am following a diversion of the New York to Bermuda flight to address a non-critical equipment issue.
“Maintenance crews are addressing the issue and an unrelated lightning strike that occurred while en-route to Boston. Customers are being accommodated on another flight on to Bermuda.”
