Govt Witnesses Answer Questions On Airport

October 6, 2016

Two Government witnesses have now answered the Commission’s questions on the airport project, the Commission of Inquiry said today.

Government Witnesses Answer Questions

The Commission said, “At the start of Wednesday’s hearings, Commission Chairman Sir Anthony Evans noted that two Government witnesses have now answered the Commission’s questions on the airport project.

“Sir Anthony informed counsel that Commission members are now awaiting the documentation which was requested and to which Government witnesses have made reference in their revised witness statements. Counsel stated that the documents are expected to be identified and received on Thursday.”

Govt Prior Statement: Airport Not ‘Within Scope’

The Government had previously said, “Government has been consistent in its representations to the Commission that the LF Wade Project is not within their Terms of Reference or ‘scope’.

“The Commission has persisted in requesting documents and has asked civil servants to provide information about the airport project.

“Although Government has advised that civil servants must cooperate with the Commission, our position has not changed that the LF Wade Project is not within the Commission’s Terms of Reference or ‘scope’.”

Written Objections To Airport Inclusion

Following the Government’s statement, the Commission said “The Commission also wishes to advise that subsequent to the Government press conference and statement last Friday [September 23, 2016], Government has now followed proper procedure which the Commission established for those who wish to make objection to any matter which the Commission proposes to examine as part of its inquiry.

“Written objections to the inclusion of the airport were received yesterday [Monday, September 26, 2016] from the Attorney General’s Chambers on behalf of the Government. In accordance with our published rules, the Commission must deliberate on those objections and proposes to make a decision shortly.

“Because the issue has been raised publicly, the Commission also wishes to state publicly that no undertaking was ever given to the Government that we would not inquire into the airport project.”
