Donald Trump Wins U.S. Presidential Election
Bermuda residents joined many around the world in keeping a close eye on American news coverage to watch the United States Presidential Election unfold, with businessman Donald Trump winning the Presidency.
The Republican field began with 17 candidates, and Donald Trump claimed the Republican nomination, while Hillary Clinton was the Democratic nominee, marking the first time one of the major US parties had a female candidate.
As the results came in late last night showing Mr Trump winning some key battleground states such as Florida, Canada’s immigration website crashed, markets started cratering and the Mexican peso tumbled to an all-time low.
Mr Trump launched his campaign in June 2015, with the businessman having never held political office before. He surprised many by winning the Republican nomination, and as the night continued to unfold showing a close contest, U.S. political commentator Dan Pfeiffer said, “Whatever happens tonight, everything, everyone has believed about polls, data, and the electoral map is being turned on its head.”
“Trump will take office with Congress fully under Republican control,” the Associated Press report. “Senate control means Trump will have great leeway in appointing Supreme Court justices, which could mean a shift to the right that would last for decades.
“Trump upended years of political convention on his way to the White House, leveling harshly personal insults on his rivals, deeming Mexican immigrants rapists and murderers, and vowing to temporarily suspend Muslim immigration to the U.S.
“He never released his tax returns, breaking with decades of campaign tradition, and eschewed the kind of robust data and field efforts that helped Obama win two terms in the White House, relying instead on his large, free-wheeling rallies to energize supporters. His campaign was frequently in chaos, and he cycled through three campaign managers this year.
“The mood at Clinton’s party grew bleak as the night wore out, with some supporters leaving, others crying and hugging each other. Top campaign aides stopped returning calls and texts, as Clinton and her family hunkered down in a luxury hotel watching the returns.
“At 2 a.m., Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta told the crowd to head home for the night with the race not officially called, but the Democrat’s fate all but certain.”
The electorate is never wrong. That being said, OUCH! It was Clinton’s to lose. Big. Let’s hope for the best . . .

We now have to consider the implications of a President Trump to Bermuda. Perhaps the most immediate is whether he will attempt to impose any legislation that would impede Bermuda’s insurance and reinsurance sector.

It is yet to be seen if Trump will accomplish a fraction of what he has promised, but we certainly knew we would get nothing from Clinton. We should NOT be throwing stones, as our political system is a hott mess and with all the infighting going on with the PLP, we have a similar situation full of inexperience, huge egos and broken promises. We may well have a Trump Jr. leading our country in a year or so. Let’s hope not. This has nothing to do with race.
Why is it that white Bermudians or residents such as “lion fish” deny that racism played any role in the phenomenon that became Trumpism and resulted in his victory at the polls.
Was it the only factor? No. But “lion fish” will assert that it played no factor at all despite the fact that is was staring him or her in the face in plain sight throughout the campaign.

Trump IS the establishment. He builds hotels. He goes into debt and screws his investors then bolts leaving others to pick up the pieces. If you are looking for a guy who does not care about the little people who work jobs every day, well there he is. If you are looking for a guy who does dirty back-office deals to serve himself then here he is. Trump has never worked for anybody but himself. The idea of public service is the opposite of what this guy is. He is exactly what working people fear when they say the word “establishment” and yet they went out and voted for him.
I think that is mostly because they find him engaging and entertaining. He frees them from the responsibility of thinking through what they can practically expect from their government. Whatever the reason Trump and the republican party have been richly rewarded for obstructive tactics and trashy innuendo.
It is a scenario that looks all too familiar to us out here in the Atlantic.

In other news cannabis was made legal in 3 more states and still waiting on a count from maine. Medical cannabis in proper form was allowed in two more states with another opting for a limited programme. Meanwhile here in Bermuda we MAY have a consultation to CONSIDER decriminalisation…so slow on the uptake aren’t we.

No they cant ! all that is offered in Bermuda is CDB oil that is made from the hemp tree. Its not the same as medical cannabis which has CBD and THC! I have a family member that has a license in Bermuda to purchase it over the internet which makes no sense having a license because in the states anyone can order CBD oil over the internet because it has no THC in it which makes it illegal in some states.My family member has to travel to Colorado to get real Medical cannabis which is not available to recreational cannabis users because of the specific amounts of CBD and THC prescribed by physicians. When purchasing from dispensaries they have a counter for recreational users and a separate for medical which you have to produce a medical card from a reputable doctor.Dont believe that what you are able to get in Bermuda is the real medical cannibis because its not!
I find it funny that people are disliking Facts!! My son has a license which is signed by the premiere and minister of security and he is terminally ill and presently in the states getting treatment including medical cannabis because the product that he gets through his license is not the real cannabis oil which contains CBD and THC which is abstracted from the marijuana plant not the Hemp plant which only has CBD,the reason why Hemp is legal. CBD has healing components THC has healing components and acts as a natural pain killer.Dislike facts all you want but I’m speaking from experience and years of research as my son was given months to live,5 years ago. His oncologist can attest to this as he continues to defy science.

He said he wants to #1 DRAIN THE SWAMP #2 NOT MANY WOMEN ARE CLAIMING HE FONDLED THEM BUT INFACT THEY ARE CLAIMING HE TRIED KISSING THM WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT #3 HE IS NOT FACING ANY RAPE CHARGES OF A 13 YR OLD…THERE IS NO FACTUAL EVIDENCE OF THAT#4 HIM FILING FOR NUMEROUS BANKRUPTCIES HAVE AFFORDED HIM THE OPPORTUNITY,THROUGH FLAWED LAWS,TO AVOID PAYING OVER $800 MIL IN TAXES!
I do agree with you first statement that not everyone that voted for trump is a racist but every (white) racist voted for trump as I am in Trump land now and have experienced it first hand!
If Hillary would have won we would have seen civil unrest like the US has never seen before as the tension was unbelievable! People walking around openly carrying weapons legally and asking who you were voting for! I kept my daughter home from university today in fear of unrest,especially here, were 99% of people are Trump supporters.

Someone reported them openly carrying a weapon which the police confirmed them having the license too…its legal. They weren’t threatening anyone just asking them who they were voting for but its quite intimidated because they had the rifle slung over their shoulder in public but its not illegal….youtube open carry incidents and you will understand what I mean it could be quite intimidating but in some states its not illegal if you have a license for open carry.

Is it possible civil unrest could still happen with the Trump win? A lot of people are extremely angry at the election result.
Oh yea its quite possible that it will happen with a trump win as we are seeing it happen to an extent in California right now as I’m posting.

@thoughtful. You are fully entitled to your opinion as I am. Rather you chose to believe what I stated iin true or not is entirely up to you. However, what I could add to my comments is that The Donald is going to face plenty of issues moving forward. I listed them in my prior posting so I won’t bore you with them again.
As for Hillery, best woman for the job, she’s smart and knows the landscape, far more then I can say for Trump, he hasn’t a clue on what he is about to face.
By the way one does not have to be white to be a racist.

Were the protecting the second amendment on your behalf. Were then making sure Trump won the election. Seriously, is that the world you want to live in, not me mate.

I can’t believe Bermudians had so much to say about the election results. I hope Trump is a good President. No one could be worse than what we have had for the last 8 years. Even though Obama was not everyone’s choice, we did not go to the streets crying and demonstrating. This is exactly why Trump was elected. People are tired of the last 8 years and want change. Count your blessings you do not have to deal with Obamacare when min wage is $7.25 per hour. You might have a different outlook if your beautiful country was bombed. 911 & Boston should never be forgotten.
