A police spokesperson said, “Around 9:40pm on Wednesday, November 23rd police officers were dispatched to a reported attempted armed robbery at Arnold’s Express on Front Street in the City of Hamilton.
“Initial information suggests that two unknown men entered the store, one brandishing what appeared to be a firearm, demanding money.
“However, both suspects left the premises a short time later empty handed. There were no reported injuries.
“Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the surrounding area around 9:30pm Wednesday to contact the Criminal Investigation Unit on 247-1744 or the confidential and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”
A heightened visible presence of police officers is needed in and around the areas of these small stores. Armed robbers look for opportunities. The cost of security is an added expense to any business and this is passed onto the consumer, if its 100 to 300 per day staggered hours I don,t know, what-ever security, it will cost, and flip side is, it may only be a mild deterrent. Should police provide protection to businesses? They do, in a different manner, by patrolling the streets, and where there is likely to be huge numbers of people they put in additional police officers, its more based on anticipated need, i.e. crowd control, heavy motor traffic. Some businesses do hire uniformed police officers during particular times of the year. There are over a hundred businesses in the city, it is not possible to be everywhere every hour. Virtually every robber, must have some form of transport, more vehicle road check-points may minimize the mobility of some persons thinking of criminal activity. We do have the Regiment for additional support, who can work alongside of the police in some instances.
